Then employ trapping as well. If dog does not do it for me, then I kill oppossums which combined is probably at a rate to significantly reduce oppossum abundance at least locally since they have relatively small home ranges. If I were to be trapping foxes, then a fair portion of time would be tied up doing it. Part of my descision making regarding such efforts is that not all foxes in a given area target my fowl. Fox coming from west does not. Fox coming from east puts a lot of effort into it. Getting east fox would in my case be stopping point unless west fox took up habit.

I have a question about trapping...

If I leave out a cage trap and bait it, lets say I catch one of the foxes. If I lure a bunch of foxes in, and one is in the trap, that leaves three more foxes in my yard. Seems to me like they are going to leave their buddy in the trap and keep right on going to the chicken coop.

Also, I have heard killing them is useless because more will just move in to the territory to take their place. Truth to that?

Killing adult foxes this time of year can result in more than just animal killed dying. It often takes both parents to raise a litter, especially are large litter and reduced food will impact litter size.

Killing only problem foxes will reduce the odds a dead individual will simply be replaced. Foxes that remain that are not over investing in chicken hunting will keep out those that might out unless they are taking on a new mate.
