Sick Pea Chick Died - Going to Vet School For Necropsy - Will Post Results

My lone chick from this year will be at least 6 months old before it touches the ground... only because it hatched in Sept in ND.  It'll be at least March or April before it's warm and dry enough for it to go outside    Until then, it stays in the house.  The only other chick hatched and raised here beat the odds... Hatched and raised by a chicken hen, on the ground from day one, non-medicated feed...

I appreciate your willingness to share the information, I really want to know what happened.  :hugs

No problem at all.

My big boy Prince was not put outside until a few weeks ago and he has not had any problems. 6 months seems like a good age.

I love your chicken stall set up!  How big are the individual stalls?

Thank you. As far as the measurements, I'm not sure. I use to know but I forgot. I will measure this weekend and let you know.

The stalls are where all of the animals go in to roost at night or to get out of the rain or weather or to just nap during the day. I close and lock the stalls up at night and open them up in the morning so they can free range.

There were 2 peas, 1 guinea and 3 turkeys. The pea that died was the only one that got sick. No illnesses from the others. My other pea was flying around the yard yesterday fanning and teasing the older peacocks. :)

You may want to get a baseline weight on her stall buddies, then reweigh once a week just to be safe.

I will catch the little buggars and do that. Thanks.

I checked on her this morning and she had passed. I am so sad. She was fine last night. I have her body on ice. I want to open her up to check her liver. I will call the state vet to see what to do.
Thank you everyone for all of your help. I will keep everyone posted on necropsy results.
I just saw this -- I am so sorry for your loss!!! Please let us know what you found out.

Thanks Terri. Yes, your grand pea chick is gone. On the road right now headed to LSU. The lab is waiting on me now. Will report back.

Drive safe.

Thank you. I have delivered the body to LSU. I completed paperwork, left my notes and pics of the poop. I'm on the road headed home. Now we wait.......

I'm so sorry; and thank you for posting the results when you get them, so the rest of us learn some more.
