Sick Pea Chick Died - Going to Vet School For Necropsy - Will Post Results

UPDATE:

Day #4
I raced home on yesterday to check on the patient. I went in the bathroom and it looked like a hurricane had been in there. My poor baby must have being flying around the bathroom all day. Stuff was all over the bathroom. Well she was waiting for me at the bathroom door when I opened it. There was poo all over and it was in different consistencies. There was the firm, dark brown poop and some watery yelllow/green poo. When I saw that, I got nervous. (See pics below). I thought maybe she was getting sick all over again but she was not exhibiting any signs of lethargy, weakness, etc. I concluded that her poo was watery from the stress of being locked up in the bathroom and not being able to walk around freely. So, I let her walk around the house so that she could calm down and she did. I fed her and gave her her meds. I took a pic of her poop after she ate. (See pic). I also weighed her and her weight increased from 2.47 lbs to 2.61 lbs. I was happy about the weight gain. So, she is not losing weight. Thank GOODNESS!!! I placed her in her pet carrier, covered it and called it a night. I nervously woke up this morning and went to her carrier. She was up and waiting to get out. I took her out and let her stretch her legs. Her poop had firmed up and was looking better but still had a yellow/greenish liquid around it. (SEE PIC OF OVERNIGHT POO BELOW). I fed her (Purina Game Bird Startena 30% protein - see pics below), gave her her meds and vitamins and let her walk around some more. Before I left, she had poo-ed again and I took another pic (See Pic Below). Her poo is looking much better. It looks like it looked yesterday. It was firm and brown (but still had a yellow/greenish liquid around it). I put her in the wash room with her medicated water and feed. I hope she does better in the wash room. I hope she doesn't have a bad day of being alone. If so, I will have to figure out something else. I may have to place her outside in one of the chicken stalls by herself. She will be able to see and hear the other animals and that may calm her down. I will have to cover the stall floor with hay (currently has dirt floor) so that she does not eat any dirt or anything else that could irritate her tummy.

Casportpony, I went to TSC to get the Corrid but they were out. I will have to call around to find some.

Well, that's it for today's update. Two more days of treatment but I"m not sure that will be enough. I think I will still need to take her to the avian vet. If the vet is working this weekend, I think I will take the 1 1/2 hour drive to let him to take a look at her and do some testing. I am very curious to know what's wrong with her.

I will update everyone tomorrow.

Thanks again for the well wishes.

How old is the feed? check the date, last time i went to get that feed it was 3 months old, nope i ain't buying that, it takes me a month to use it when i have babies so i stopped buying it and supplemented the flock raiser with ultra kibble, vegetables, seeds and scrambled eggs.

The date is always the first thing that I look at when they bring it out to me. It was September 2012. Between they turkeys, guineas and other peas, they go through it within a week's time.

I decided to do another table that shows one of my chicks downward spiral. He, like yours, looked fine one day then quite ill the next. When I picked him up on 09-19 I knew we were in trouble. At that point, based on his previous gains, he should have weighed around 1500 grams, not 1265, which was below his 09-03 weight of 1340. He's still well below where he should be, but at least he's headed the right direction.

Here is all of my weight and medication data in spreadsheet form. My spreadsheet takes their most recent weight and calculates the oral dose of the listed medications. Then if they need something, I don't have to think, lol.

Here are two pics of Red's poo on 09-19 I'll see if I can get some "after" pics tomorrow.
Thanks for the information. Can you convert the measurements to lbs? I'm not good at the conversions. I love seeing poo pics.

There are online conversion calculators if you ever need them, just search something like 'convert grams pounds'.

On another note, you might want to consult an avian vet and make sure that you are dealing with cocci and not blackhead...

Feathers crossed for baby!

Ok Frosty, I found it.

Here are the weights again in grams.

2.47 lbs = 1120.373 grams
2.61 lbs = 1183.876 grams

Casportpony, now I can compare the weight with yours.

This baby was born 7-12-2012 and currently weighs 1183.876. So, from looking at the weight of yours, my baby is way underweight. :(

I can change the ones in the table when my my roommate gets off of the computer (I'm using an IPad). For now, your peas last two weights of 2.47 pounds and 2.4 pounds convert to 1120gr and 1088gr. Have you weighed her again today? How's she doing?

:thumbsup  good deal

Zazouse, you bring up a great point about the date of the feed. Everyone should make sure they check the dates on the bags of feed that they buy BEFORE leaving the feed store. Some feed stores have feed on the shelves that is 3 months or more old. Always buy fresh feed.
