sick pig

Our tame and domestic pigs are not used to that however and don't adapt to wild conditions just in the snap of a finger changing a diet or giving it a bit of food they are not used to having can make them sick.

Usually not sick enough to die so quickly like this one did.

Exactly. If you think of a person who has eaten bad meat, they don't usually die over night. More often than not, they don't die at all. I'm not saying that the meat couldn't have contributed, but it is very likely this pig had other underlying conditions or illnesses.

We never give our boar or sow meat, but like the other previous poster said what you feed them is what quality of meat they will make. But YES pig will eat meat. Our sow has gotten a hold of dead rottens in her pen. She has eaten them! She has never fallen sick like that. I really don't think this was just caused by a small amount of meat, unless you fed the pig mounds of bad meat products then yes it could cause internal issues. Otherwise in this case it really sounds like some other type of illness was present!

I would suggest OP next time to always have your Pigs in there own seperate pen/ with shade. They are social creatures, but they will honestly eat anything in site, even other animals feces which is not a good thing. Our pigs are seperated because we have a boar and sow (only together when breeding) We find it the easiest to have a few pens they go too on our land. We allow the grass to regrow and move them around to each pen! They love it! You don't need to have a big mud pit in your yard to have a pig, the pig is actually what causes the nasty mud mess! Our pens are shaded, we also use kiddie pools that they love to sit in (that gets pretty nasty but easy clean up) We actually got both pigs from a rescue, they were still only about 3 months, but they are both sweet as pie! Even the boar! They love us greatly and come grunting/squealing everytime they see us! HA

I am sorry OP! This doesn't mean you are not able to have a pig! Things happen that our out of our control! Pigs are great pets! and great meat

I feed my chickens meat too... chickens eat meat in the wild. Ever see them attack a mouse or frog or worm or grasshopper or chimpmunk??
I have....

Chicken do eat "meat" in the wild.

And yes, you are right. You should NEVER feed your pigs or ANY animals spoiled meat. But thats kinda a common sense thing.

Actually, quite often, yes it is. Pigs are often scavengers in the wild and will eat just about anything they come across, including a rotting carcass. Believe me, I know!

Yep! Ever hear the stories the Civil War soldiers told after the war?? How the wounded men would crawl and hide in the woods until help could come. But at night the pigs would find the men(probably smelled the blood). And the pigs would eat the wounded guys... the other soldiers could hear it.
Pretty gruesome stuff, but pigs are scavengers and will eat anything.
(except my picky ones that wont eat celery)

Well, my vet finally called at 10 last night..says theyre have been many farm animals that have died the past week due to the heat wave we were having!! So, like some of you guys have said, I seriously doubt was the meat(was only about 7-8 small pieces cut up, and about a day over what I would have ate)..cant imagine that killing her and sooo quick at that.. Going to wait a little while until we go get another one..research more of whats in the pen and more in general about pigs........

Don't beat yourself up over the meat thing. I truly do not believe that wuold have caused that quick of a death. I had a Pot belly that was completely healthy for the first 4 months of her life and then just flopped over gone. I was very upset and spoke to my vet whom assured me it was nothing I did but probably more then likely a genetic defect because pot bellies have been overbred. I am so sorry for your loss. Don't give up! I now have 2 pot bellies and they are the best!

Thanks so much..i really was at first but now figuring it couldnt be and then you have people who come on here and make you feel worse, so that doesnt help. She is a regular pig, not a pot belly but just stinks the whole thing..we only had her for a few days..cant help but think was something we did....appreciate your nice email
