I went out to do chicken chores this morning and I realized that one of the silkies was acting strangely. It is a straight run and is only 3 months old, so we're not sure of the sex. It is about 36 degrees in their coop this morning. Peep is all fluffed up and standing alone. He acts like he is having a difficult time walking and standing. He has diarrhea. Vent looks clear and crop was not full. He is coughing, gasping and gurgling. Not sure what direction to go with treatment.

I’m so sorry about your baby! :hugs

First things first, I would move the bird to a warmer environment, away from the rest of the flock, and out of any cold wind; preferably inside. You really need to make an effort to get food/nutrition inside the bird. Also, are antibiotics an option?

I'm heading out the door to pick up another brooding light to separate him. I'm thinking potentially coccidiosis? Is Cordid a good option to treat? The closest option to us to get treatment is a TSC.

I was also thinking coccidiosis. Especially based on your birds age/symptoms. Yes, corrid is a one of the best options of treatment.

When you have time, can you post some photos of the chick, the poop and your housing?

Since you are on your way to TSC pick up some Corid and Tylan50 along with a package of 18 or 20 gauge needles and a few syringes (to draw up medicine). It won't hurt to have both on hand, especially if the store is not convenient to get to.

The coughing, gasping and gurgling is concerning. If you have a video of that, upload to youtube, then provide us a link. He may have a respiratory illness, but often times there is more than one illness/condition going on.

Keep him warm, you mention you are providing heat? How much ventilation does the housing have?

I would also look inside his beak just to make sure there is no obstruction, canker or lesions.

Report back and let us know how he is.

When I got home I transferred him into quarantine. I noticed his crop was squishy, so I massaged it. He started spitting up and freaking out, then he passed. RIP Peep. I'm watching the others closely. I just completely cleaned and sanitized their coop and cleaned all water and food containers. They have a register vent that is always open at the top of their coop. It's never damp in their and is never over 40 degrees.

I'm very sorry:hugs

Do your chicks have a source of grit available?
