The Safeguard dose I use currently is .5ml per 2.2 pounds once and repeat in ten days. This is the amount that several avian vets have recommended. If I were to use the .2ml dose it would be for three days and if I suspected capillary worms it would be the .5ml dose for 5 days, but I would never use the.2ml dose for just one day.

Awesome Kathy, I looked up what gander007 posted (your instructions) up and printed everything out in color so I know exactly what I am doing here. I bought everything you suggested to as well. the liquid suspension and I've got my scale out ready to rock and roll tomorrow! I think I will do the .5ml per 2.2lbs one time.

No, the state vet did not. But would it hurt to treat for this even if she didn't have any issues with either? Just curious...

It's no wonder we all get confused about fenbendazole dosages. Kathy's vet recommends 50 mg per Kg( 2.2 lb.,) where these links state that the dose is 20mg/kg X3 days, and another says 1 mg/kg X 5 days.

I asked if they could do a gram stain and they said no. All they could do was check for cocci or parasites. It was a vet clinic for dogs and cats, but you would think that they could do more. What exactly is a gram stain?

One more thing to add to the report, this worm (SOB) can lead to Blackhead... Could this be the liver par of Velma's issues? Just curious...

OK....Any first year college student can do a gram stain and most can probably read it as well. If it a worm or parasite a fecal float will show the eggs and dead segments, this is the same test used on dogs and cats. You might need a vet more willing to treat chickens.

I have found that vets that see rare and exotic birds have the no how to treat chickens. One of our hens had gape worm and the cost, including enougt meds to treat 10 times was $50.00. Its the first time I have ever taken a chicken to a vet but

The full, but small report: Velma has a worm called Heterakis Gallinareum. It is treated with Febendazole- 10-50 mg/kg and I am to repeat in 10 days. She also suggested that I deworm all of my girls, however the two week period is not up yet from my original deworming with Wazine. So? do I go ahead and deworm with the Safeguard tomorrow or wait until the 2 weeks is officially up? I haven't had a chance to do research on this particular worm and it's effects, but if anyone knows anything about it scream it my way. lol There was no presents of Cocci, but that doesn't mean that it wasn't there to begin with? Can a parasite cause this much trouble? I will stick with the Penicillin for another 3-4 days and deworm and we will see if she improves. If no improvement then I will give her a break and treat with Tylan. Unless someone else has any other advice???

On a side note, it was so hard tracking down 1ml syringes. Every pharmacy looked at me like I was a crack head or something. Then proceeded to ask what I was using them for and such. I would tell them and they looked at me like ya right you have chickens? I guess I am not the "type" to have chickens by societies perception... Bum bum bum... WHATEVER! I finally found a pharmacy willing to sell them to me YAY! The farm store didn't have anything smaller than a 3ml syringe.

It could be that the Corid treatment took care of it, or maybe the necretitis caused the blood in the stools. As far as worming a second time goes, I have heard most of the chicken people say you can do it in 10 days. Dawg53 is the resident worm expert on BYC. Yes, that worm could be the source of all problems... If your bird has blackhead it very possible that is has one or more secondary infection(s) like e.coli, yeast, coccidiosis. Treatment for blackhead is metronidazole, no less than 30mg/kg once a day for five days, but I have heard of vets prescribing 60mg/kg twice a day for five days. The treatment for the cecal worm would be 50mg/kg and you can treat for both at the same time.

Will the vet you saw prescribe metronidazole for you? If not, you can get 250mg powder packs at Petsmart, it's called API General Cure.

I just looked up the symptoms for Blackhead and she doesn't have yellowish poo at all. It's been a consistant green with white in it. But all the other symptoms she has. lethargy, keeping eyes closed, ect... To be honest I am not sure what the vet would do for me. They don't "do" chickens. She really had no clue even about the worm she found. I am at my witz end with all of this. I don't know what is going on or any vet that is willing to work with me. I think i'm about to rant for a moment. I live in backasswards Arkansas and no one is willing to help any one out. It is really frustrating. All they say is no we cant help you... If the purpose doesn't serve them they wont help you. I just called the other possible vet out of town and they said no we can't help you. I told them I just needed a test done for yeast and bacteria. Sorry we don't do poultry is what I got. I am out of possible solutions here and I really want to help her. I just don't know what to do. However, I will do some more digging about Blackhead and see if more of her symptoms match up. And, I've got a petsmart right down the road.
