Sign Stolen?

Seems our Capitol always has somebody up in arms at one time or another.

My mother is a pastor, I am also a Christian. Mom and I both agree that if we allow religious freedom of expression on public ground, then freedom of expression should be allowed for all.

From the original article in the Seattle Times:
State carpenter Jim Buenzli, who first noticed the missing atheist sign Friday morning, said he was fed up by the whole furor. That's why he applied for permission to place the Festivus pole, which he planned to purchase and install next week.

"I got sick of the way these things were going, so I wanted to put some humor into it," Buenzli said. "They're making a big mockery out of our state on the news."

I agree, almost makes me embarrassed to admit where I live. Merry Festivus to all!

See, you accept that other believe differently. That sign is balatanly unaccepting. If a group of Christians put up a sign that said "People who do not believe in god are stupid and their beliefs are wrong." You would be upset.

The meaning of the sign was good, to represent the non-religious where Christians get to be represented, but the way they went about it was all wrong. They could have used more curtousey.

True.

I saw the news thing about it.

I agree with Chiknmama and bluey.

Our nativity scene doesn't bash your beliefs or state something implying y'alls beliefs are idiocy, unlike what the sign stated.

God loves you, whether you like it or not.

I don't think these should be displayed. It is one thing to believe in something and support it but just going out and saying someone else is wrong and everything they believe in is fake should not be allowed. I am enraged at this. What about children? Have you ever thought of how imprint able children are? A kid sees a manger and it is a manger if they don't believe in that but they see a sign that says plain as day what they believe in is wrong is going to make them question their beliefs. If they are raised in a religious upbringing they won't know what to believe in. The last few posts are completely correct

And I bet you see nothing wrong with what you just said, huh. That is so sad. If you are not comfortable enough in your beliefs that you feel the need to shelter your children, forcing them to only hear YOUR beliefs until you have them to the point they are no longer able to think for themselves, there is a HUGE problem. My precious atheist children have literally been beat up by the children thumping their bibles and told they would continue to beat them up until they learn to believe in god. It didn't work. Train your children and give them the freedom to choose and to think.

Well, if a child is raised with a firm foundation in any religion, they won’t care what some random sign says, what matters most to a child is the calm secure faith that a parent displays, whatever the faith is. Questions are natural, kids ask them all the time, it’s the answers they get that are important.

If a child knew their parent stole that sign, that would send a message I would not want any child of mine to hear… it would be a message worse than the words on some plaque. The theft goes against the teachings of any faith I can think of. I can’t think of one that would condone theft, and the theft itself is what the original post was about, not whether or not the sign raises uncomfortable questions, or is polite. It expresses someone’s opinion, rude, polite, or anything else, agree, disagree or totally neutral, stealing is a bad idea.

I don't feel i need to shelter them and you completely mis-understood that

I just mean to say that a child that has doubts about his religion and being raised in a religious upbringing is put in an awkward position. You can't be both an athiest and a religious believer.

If they choose to be athiests that is their decision but i will not put them in a position where they question themselves and their beliefs. I mean no disrespect

I do see things wrong with what i have said but if i said nothing wrong their wouldn't be a conversation/debate

This is exactly right and i think that this should have been a main focus of this thread. The title is sign stolen?

luvmychicknkids- I was getting ready to post something similar, great minds think alike huh?

Roosterboy- You don't have to agree with the sign, but it's our (and i mean Atheists, Agnostics, and any other non-Christians) right to let our beliefs be heard too. And doubt is part of every religion right? I think every child doubts at some point, but if you come back to it, that's what counts~

ETA- I think I started this thread with the intention of seeing people's opinions about relgious symbols on courthouse lawns this time of year. Taking into consideration that Christmas isn't the only winter-holiday.

I think that is very well said

Back to the sign, i just don't think that calling what other people believe in is fake is appropriate no matter what religion you are
