I'm sure some of my chickens will have vulture hocks too... I suppose that's why these are still considered project birds. Even though this variety can't be shown yet, it's best to breed towards the official Brahma standard.

To be fair, the seller of my eggs did indicate that vulture hocks were still a problem in this variety. I'd be really upset if I paid the prices some people are charging and got all vulture hocked birds.

?? I don't see what you mean - they are supposed to have feathers on the tops of the legs... I *think* there might be confusion on how vulture hocks appear. There should be feathering on the thigh, sort of like "shorts" so the overall shape of feathers comes to a V at the "knee." Vulture hocks are feathers that extend past that, usually pointed backwards to give the leg the appearance of > instead of straight. Like the overall shape of a vulture, I suppose.

After posting the last, I had to go out and look at them. They've got baggy shorts, of sorts. ;-) Please correct me on this! I'm not an expert by any means and hadn't even noticed until it was brought up in this thread. Checked out Feathersite for random shots and it does look like vulture hocks might be an issue in the breed as a whole - or perhaps when messing with new colors?

When you have a great side view poop its easy to tell as the VHocks form a v point. They actually grow very noticable when they chicks are about 4 weeks old I watch my chicks daily and really inspect them for the Vhocks...so If I made a boo-boo Im SOOO sorry I hope the photos can prove me wrong. I just-tonight- put 10 SLB eggs under a broody hen hoping for a few without vulture hocks...We'll see

All depends on how badly someone wants them or wants to work with this breed.

nope, no pics. dh works weekends and with 7 kids it's hard to find time....I will try either monday or tuesday...
I have a decent eye, can see these things instantly if I know the standard. Goes back to dog grooming and showing, knowing type, ya know? not to mention my OCD

OOOH forgot about the 7 kiddos--I wouldnt have decent eyes after that-bad enough I call my girls ( 2 ) by their wrong names at times!

well, it's a good thing I didn't "purposely" get into the breed or I might be upset....only way to fix is to get better birds, right? they came with my swedish flower hens and I was glad to see them

Sure - the ones I posted from 4 days ago are side shots, but there's some lower feathering covering up the thighs. Taking some shots right now - not seeing it. Tell me if I'm missing something, please.

On my D'Uccle, there's nothing to pull back - those feathers are vulture hocks:

is it something different on a Brahma?
