I have three 3-4 week old Silkie chicks. One (green marker) has never been as vivacious as the other 2, but eats drinks, and runs around with them. They are still in the house in the 48 qt. tub with a light in one end. The nights are too chilly to put them outside (even with a light) in the pack and play on the screen porch, but I plan to transition them soon. Okay, that is the History. Now for the problem...
I noticed that one of them( green marker) had "Pasty Butt" about 2 days ago, figured that I had started feeding them mealworms too soon, so I added electrolytes to their water. I cleaned her rear with q-tip soaked in warm water. I have had to do that 3-4 times daily both days. I saw her poop today, and it is completely normal. I noticed a weird thing, though. She walks around (for lack of a better term) flexing her little vulva constantly. I can see it well because her rear is bare because of my "doctoring" it.
All I can figure is that fecal material is seeping out as she flexes her little rear, thus causing the pasting.
SHE ACTS LIKE SHE FEELS FINE!
Does anyone know what might be wrong?
Have any of you had a similar problem?
Thank you in advance for taking time to read and reply!

as far as I know the flexing is normal mine do it too. I call it winking. because it kinda winks . but as long as nothing is seeping out I wouldn't worry too much. as for the pasty butt have you tried probotics ? they are very good for intestinal health and supply the gut with beneficial bacteria and fighting off bad bacteria
I use a product called probios you can get online. I used it ever since mine were chicks
I started when mine got pasty butt it cured it right up never to return again. its great for the whole flock. you might consider giving it a try. as for the winking I wouldn't worry. as far as I know its normal as long as nothing is seeping out good luck . best wishes

Their rear end is called their Vent :) I have a chick ( a buff orpington ) who does that as well, and I was wondering how normal that is. Guess it is, which thankfully means one less thing to worry about :)

oooh...I forgot about the term "vent"! I knew that!! Thanks!
I'm still not sure that it's normal in this particular case, but time will tell. In the meantime, I will add some of the acidopholis (sp) capsules that I keep on hand for dogs and us when an intestinal virus rears its ugly head. Wondering if this will help...?
