Silkie Breeders?

Quote:
Hmm... Ok! So, just to clarify, one or two nice birds (not the $100 super good birds) and then a few CL silkies just for fun? At least for now, until i get out of college and into the real world, and have a job and my own house and all.

So... i will be ordering some buff silkie eggs, probably from steve at the bantam barn, within two weeks. The incubator i have is on loan from a friend and i dont want to keep it for too long. Anyone have any tips for my first ever time incubating eggs?

This is what I do when I get shipped eggs. I unwrap and place in an egg carton, air sac up. I let them sit till they get to room temp (if I am incubating shipped eggs in the summer and the eggs are warm when I unwrap them, I put them straight in the incubator). Once they get to room temp, I put them in my incubator, but I leave the turner unplugged for 2-3 days. Gives them extra time to rest, and so far it has been working great. After 2-3 days I plug the turner back in. I use a forced air incubator. Either my Brinsea Octagon 40 or my Hovabator 1588 w/turner. I don't monitor humidity. I just monitor the air sacs and make sure they are growing. About once a week I do mist down the eggs in the incubator with some warm Brinsea incubation disinfectant. Day 18 I move them to the hatcher, either my other 1588 or my 1602n still air. I keep the humidity around 70% in the hovabator forced air and around 65% in my 1602n still air. I hatch them in egg cartons, with holes poked in the bottom. I also trim down the sides of the carton a little bit.

Good Luck!

I just met one of our BYC members who shows silkies ....She is mbrobbins... I have seen her farm and it's very nice. Mary has won awards for her silkies. You can see pics of them in the bsa section. I picked up some silky eggs and she was kind enough to give me some seramas that she had available as well. and probably won't show them as we farm full time. I just want to have some for being broody mothers and getting me off grid a bit with so many incubators running. Please pm her on this board, or you may pm me with your contact information and I'll forward to her. Glad your chicken interest is starting early. Thanks so much and have a blessed day. Nancy

Hi!! I will go ahead and post, because i am sure others will see this thread and use it for reference in their endeavors to search for certain colors, outcross stock, etc... whatever their needs. LOL

www.echoinghills.net~my website

I do not have anything available just yet, but i may have 2 lav split cockerals ready soon...i am just trying to decide if i want to let them go! I do not sell eggs at this time, because my hens are not consistent hardly ever, and that has been a challenge for me with having very few hens, since i went down to my "BEST".

I currently have lavender and lavender splits as my primary program...lav splits also producing blue, splash, and possibly black w/wo lav lacing. I sold my flock of partridge and white silkies, to start over in buff and partridge in better quality. I may have Buffs/Partridge in my program at a later date. My lavenders are from Fawkes Feather, my splits are from Porto and Revolutionmama lines. I may have chicks available periodically...but not much, as i am building my foundation also right now...and keeping back to see what looks exhibition quality for future shows.

I have to agree with everyone else on this thread... this is not an affordable hobby if you are starting out with limited funds! You get what you pay for...if you are looking for a cheap buy, expect to get pets much of the time. Maybe you can find a "Mentor" that is willing to sacrifice and help you out. But that is doubtful, because everyone else has invested in their good quality stock, and needs to try to reimburse some of that investment by selling birds at a reasonable amount of money...and what they feel the bird is worth. I also am a firm believer...if you "buy" the bird, you will take the best care you can with it and not neglect it. You say you are going into college... who is going to take care of these birds while you are busy or away? My daughter is in College...and guess who takes care of her dog and animals? Me...her mother. Is it fair to me or her animals? No...it is not fair, but as a parent you feel you have to help as much as you can. I just wish my daughter had listened and not jumped into things, when i advised her not to get animals when school is her highest priority. Please dont take all this the wrong way...but i am just throwing this scenario out there...because i am living this, and it makes for a very busy schedule for a parent.

Im not in college yet, im only a freshman in highschool, and im homeschooled so i can stay with my birds as much as i need. When i go to college in 4 years, my little brother, who is 5 years younger, whom i am training to take care of chooks, will take care of my birds.
