Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

I had eggs last year that hatched 2 or 3 days late. I had them under a hen and she ended up with 6 or 7 chicks if I remember right and left the last three eggs. I put those in the incubator and they hatched a couple days later.

My boss was ready to throw them, she was convinced they were infertile. I had candled everything and I knew there were chicks in there. I couldn't tell the difference if they were dead or alive, so I gave it a shot and I guess it worked out for those chicks.

Well I candled it, I don't think it made it =( Half the egg is empty(not the aircell, that is clearly visible) the other half is very dark and the edges stop abruptly like a blood pool

I will give it a couple days. But I want to go pick up some mille fleur d'uccle chicks today =)

What do chipmunk stripes mean as far as color and breeding? I have several different color chicks hatching with these markings but when they feather out they are normal color.
The stripes mean it is carrying the partridge genes. It may become partridge or it may turn solid depending on the parents.
While on the subject of grays/partris...here is a seemingly silly question:
Is this chick a partridge or a gray?

Partridge coloring but may turn solid.
I had a chick that looked like a silver partridge and grew up to look like this. It doesn't look like the pictures of silver partridge roosters that i've seen. Is this just leakage? I plan to sell this guy and another that looks just like him with gold in the same places that he has silver. I want to know exactly what I've got first. Thanks!

This is a nice boy and could be very useful in breeding grays.
10 pm is my little egg's hatch date! Hoping for a baby! I will be devastated if it doesn't hatch, after having to put Nori down...

Do you think Monday would be long enough?

For anyone with an iPhone, there is a nice free app called iHatch that tracks hatches for you. It has day by day graphics depicting the growth of the embryo, along with a description of what is transpiring daily. My daughter and I like this app quite a bit...its fun and helpful to keep track of the hatches. The app also allows us to add reminders.

So sorry about the chick. I remember you having incubator problems and this is the kind of thing that happens.

Ok. I'll start looking for one... Thanks for sharing what you know. I think the judge at the show i went to was thinking of other breeds because he referred me to this bird to demonstrate proper color:

Quote: And take the standard to the shows with you. If you do not understand the markings you receive, politely ask the judge to explain to you. Have your standard and make a point of writing notes or highlighting if that seems helpful.

That is the birchen colour pattern. Note that he is crow winged (no silver on primaries), has breast lacing, and his head, hackles and saddle are silver (saddle could use more silver). He would be good for breeding grey females as they are crow winged. You could show him as a grey male, but he really does not fit that description, as grey males are duckwinged.

He is one of hte best birchen patterned silkies I have ever seen. I have a birchen patterned boy, but mine is more golden than silver or gold, and I think yours has better markings.

Too bad about your egg.

I love those d'uccles! They're beautiful. I almost bought 3 porcelains for my silkie hen but ended up finding silkie chicks closer to home.. Should have gone and picked up those d'uccles anyway!
