Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

That is the birchen colour pattern. Note that he is crow winged (no silver on primaries), has breast lacing, and his head, hackles and saddle are silver (saddle could use more silver). He would be good for breeding grey females as they are crow winged. You could show him as a grey male, but he really does not fit that description, as grey males are duckwinged.

He is one of hte best birchen patterned silkies I have ever seen. I have a birchen patterned boy, but mine is more golden than silver or gold, and I think yours has better markings.
Thank you for that great feedback!

Can someone help with trying to identify the color on my silkie?

When the chick was young he was brownish and had stripes on his back like what I saw when i googled partridge and silver partridge silkie chicks....

I only have the two the dark and the white....

My next question does the white look to be a female? Dark one ?

Thank you, Herman

I had eggs last year that hatched 2 or 3 days late. I had them under a hen and she ended up with 6 or 7 chicks if I remember right and left the last three eggs. I put those in the incubator and they hatched a couple days later.

My boss was ready to throw them, she was convinced they were infertile. I had candled everything and I knew there were chicks in there. I couldn't tell the difference if they were dead or alive, so I gave it a shot and I guess it worked out for those chicks.

I have an odd hatching story like that. I hatched out some eggs. I let the late ones sit an extra 2 days with no indication of hatching. So I turned the incubator off. 2 days later I got the eggs out to throw out to clean it to LD more eggs. I put them in the trash and heard PEEP< PEEP< PEEP!! I grabbed them up listening til I found the one making the sound. Now this egg had sit in 70 degree temps for 2 days and had pipped. What a surprise. Sometimes even knowing how delicate these little precious babies are we forget just how strong they can be in the same respect. This little baby hatched an hour later!
I have found chicks that did not get under mamma during 45 degree temps laying lifeless outside the nest....brought them in..warmed them up and had them running around after an hour or so..then have a strong chick running around peeping die during the night for no apparent reason. Nature just really baffles me sometimes.

For anyone with an iPhone, there is a nice free app called iHatch that tracks hatches for you. It has day by day graphics depicting the growth of the embryo, along with a description of what is transpiring daily. My daughter and I like this app quite a bit...its fun and helpful to keep track of the hatches. The app also allows us to add reminders.

I believe this app is now available for androids. However, there may be a glitch in the calculation of hatch date. The day your eggs are set is supposed to be Day 0. Then 24 hrs from the set time is Day 1. I think this app may consider your set date to be day 1. I believe the developer was working to correct this issue.

Question about genetics. So the egg I had in the incubator died around lockdown. The eggtopsy showed a little white baby, I was expecting a black? So my question. She has a black rooster and a white hen. Would this mean her hen is dominant white, or could her roo be carrying a hidden recessive white gene? here is the picture of the baby, I can't remember if I posted it...

:( Poor thing. It looks to have some dark colored feathers too. Does it look like that to you?

What color would you call these two cockerels? Are they a light grey, Columbian or splash? Someone is selling them locally and i was considering one if it could be useful in breeding grey (my rooster died and it its hard to find a grey without autosamal red).
