So how is it that you have been showing and selling if you are not NPIP? Seriously, if one excludes one's self by not being NPIP, then how have you been doing it? Funny, I know several exhibitors that are not NPIP.
I have sent you a PM hoping that I can clear up your confusion.

OH, and just wanted to add that this is an excellent question! :) If you do not have a flock NPIP, then you can get the 90 Day NPIP, it doesn't last as long as the year flock number and is limited to specific birds you will be selling and showing. The 90 Day is much preferred over the yearly flock number because it is most current. Most shows require the 90 Day over the yearly. This is done on the same form. So every 90 days, I am getting tested again. It's much more involved than just doing the yearly, but for what I'm doing, it's worth it.

My point was that it is a fact that one does not have to be NPIP to ship, show, or sell. And it certainly is a "fad" in that folks want to jump on board just because someone else said it is the "right thing to do", despite being completely ignorant of all that is involved. I think it should be applied only to huge hatching facilities, etc and NOT small hobbyists with a few birds. As was intended, I believe.

"Methinks the lady doth protest too much"

When the testers came to my place to do my birds we spoke at length about the purpose of the NPIP program and its usefulness with backyard flock owners or breeders with limited numbers. The testers were of the opinion that the more smaller flocks they can test the better -- it enables them to track pullorum-free zones and provides statistical data about the effectiveness of the program. And while you're right about it starting with larger commercial dealers (in the 1930s, I might add, long before the existence of BYC), it is by no means limited to those facilities and is now intended to reach smaller producers and small flock owners.

I certainly didn't get my NPIP status b/c it was a "fad" -- I did it because I wanted to be a responsible poultry breeder, I wanted to ensure my flock was healthy, and I wanted to be able to show. Around here one can't participate in most shows without the testing, whether it's done at the farm or at the time of entering the show hall. In fact, I don't know of any shows that don't consider it a requirement.

I am having a hard time appreciating your criticisms of a program that is designed to keep U.S. poultry flocks healthy. But choosing NOT to participate is yours to make. You don't have to be part of the "in crowd". But I wouldn't buy birds or eggs from you, and if I saw your birds enter a show hall without confirmation of their NPIP status I would complain to the show stewards immediately.

How much does it cost you every 3 months Hawkeye?

We don't require it here in Canada in ANY province. Thought I'd mention that. In New Brunswick, we are the only province that requires vaccinating for ILT before showing. I think we should be tested. It would prevent a lot of sick birds, and I would participate if it was reasonably priced. I have no idea on cost.

in ontario u dont have to vaccinate or anything to show but if u talk to any breeder there they will all say they vaccinate for ILT its not a demand but every breeder dose it and tells every newcomer to showing to do it to so it can prevent all birds from getting sick

Incorrect. No where does it say anything about a bonnet shape. The crest should be globular, points may be deducted if the crest is too lobed but technically, the bonnet shape IS globular. It is all in perception.

Technically, the bonnet shape is not considered "globular". Its individual lobes may indeed each be globular, but the overall effect creates a non-globular appearance. Some judges overlook it if the crest size is reasonable. I don't try to breed for the bonnet -- I don't particularly like it, but I also know some judges will deduct for it.

Doesn't really prevent all birds from getting sick, but does prevent them from getting ILT - which has a very high mortality rate. I would vaccinate even if I didn't plan on showing. It's free, and worth the effort to catch them all in my opinion.
