Ladies....gentlemen...I am so glad I found this forum and joined it. I have received more info in just a couple weeks than I have in 6 months on other breed forums. And the people here are very nice...not so much on one for another breed. The thing I can count on is that the people here like Sonoran can back up what they state as well as being knowledgeable and not minding passing on their knowledge...so...thank you all so very much!

On another note....it nice having the silkie generations progress to other colors and markings...but it sure can get complicated when it is time to name just what you have...or hope you have.

For all of you who have, like me, been dealing with the controversy of what to call a "porcelain", I was looking at the top winners on the ASBC site and saw a winning "Porcelain" show by George Mihalik who is I believe the main, initial breeder of the color. So, what do you all think this means??

I recall discussions earlier this year on the other silkie thread about the naming of Porcelains. I believe SilverSilkie shared with us, that the Porcelain color in the US is very similar to the Isabelle color in Europe. I feel It would be nice to have consistency and use the same name here as used in Europe. If at any point folks want to import "Isabell" birds or eggs, at least we will be on the same page with the variety name/color. Right now, I know of one breeder who ships hatching eggs to European countries so it is not beyond imagination that US breeders may eventually want to import birds or eggs to bring in new varieties and lines. I should put out a disclaimer that my daughter and I do not have any porcelains at this time. Recently I had the opportunity to purchase a spectacular trio of porcelains here in the US. Unfortunately, at $435 they were out of my budget range...and I hesitate to spend that much on an unrecognized variety.

My suggestion is to send George a photo and talk to him...either via email or phone. You'll probably get better conversation via phone.

I contacted him earlier today on FB, but haven't heard back yet.

Hello folks, there is someone who has posted on craigslist-Washington, Snohomish/Seattle area, Farm & Garden, who is wishing to buy a silkie female, think white or pretty. sounds new and i didn't know if there is anyone on this thread that lives near that may have a pet silkie for sale and can touch bases with this person. This is a new posting today, Friday Dec. 28th.

I heard back from George Mihalik on the "Porcelain" issue. Here is what he said:

"We need to establish a name for the "porcelain". APA and ABA don't like the name porcelain. I have a suggestion to vote for the name by the silkie club members. The name would be close to the description. They are 80% lavender and 20% buff +-. Self-creme or blue-creme is the closest to the description, or we could accept another name just to get the ball rolling."

Hi All - I wasn't quite sure where to post this but thought you guys might be able to help. One of my Silkie girls hatched out two chicks over Christmas. One egg was from another Silkie girl and is black, the other one is her own egg and I have no clue what color it is. The roo is a gorgeous blue, the hen is white and I have no idea what her underlying color might be. I wasn't wanting to hatch anything from her since I unfortunately lost my white roo but she went broody while we were out of town and the chick had already started developing by the time I caught her. When baby popped out it really looked solid slate blue but as it dried it became more and more obvious that it was a little chipmunk. Could I have a partridge or is it impossible to know since I don't know what momma's underlying color is? Here are the pics:

Either partridge or grey. Whether it meets the standard is another matter entirely

I don't know if it is something in the water but.....from other people I know personally and what I have seen around on some of the threads....there are a good abundance of chicks like the one above popping up. I have had 3...a friend 2 and others. Now....a vet told me one time that every 7 or so years there will be a good amount of black kittens show up in litters. I wonder if it is possible this could happen in the chicken world or...is it just a genetic progress in breeding. I think that came out right.
