Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Just ment black skin, black bone, and black flesh.

Farmers only worry during the growing season, but towns people worry all the time.

Black skin is Fibromelanistic and its symbol is Fm - it is dominant. First generations outcrossed from Silkies usually have black skin.. I think at one point I read there was something of a sex linked to it too though - I believe fathers give it to their daughters, mothers to sons? so not all chicks in a cross have black skin? It might have been something to do with a sex linked inhibitor though.

I don't know about the bones and flesh (which is grey, not black) but it probably is too...

So, yes, probably they are all dominant and pass down.

I have noticed some yellow/greenish legs showing up in a cross between my rooster (who has NN in the background) and a Frizzle (Silkie x Cochin), so something is changing when re-combined - but they still have black skin, beaks, eyes.. just a greenish tint to their legs.

Hello fellow silkie lovers. I took my son to a poultry show a couple of weeks ago. He instantly fell in love. He's decided he would like to show his silkies. He has a heart condition and can't play any contact sports so this would be something he could do! I bought some "show quality" silkies from a breeder. Could you all point me in the right direction to find a website or a SOP book about silkies so we can educate ourselves !

They are beautiful birds! Great choice!

You can read thru this thread from the beginning and see all the really good advice on here, as well as the standard link above. That way you can see what breeders have worked with and what to look for specifically. The ones I remember are split wing or drop wing, 4 toes, no feathers on middle toe, um.. I am sure there was more. All really good information right here!

Thank
