Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

When I find Ruth's number I will send it to you. She can tell you the age limit. I have seem some really young children showing so ...with our local shows they may not be as stringent on age limits. I don't know for sure on the fair shows but we will know soon!

OK....I hatched this little chick a couple weeks ago. I am curious as to whether it is possibly a silver partridge. It does have a small bit of brown in the stripes but very little. I am hoping by the looks it is going to have a nice crest. It was 1 day old in this pic.
Thanks!!

Congratulations to Lindsey! :thumbsup   That is a lot of RB/BV and 1sts an 2nds.  Will you be sharing pictures of the winning birds? I love pictures ;)   I especially love Partridge :love

Since it was Lindsey's first show, it was a bit hectic and I completely forgot about taking pics. Maybe we can do a photo shoot at home this weekend. We sold all the partridge birds (except 2 chicks) since Lindsey is not breeding that color at this time.

Me either haha! But yes she is partridge. She does have silkie feathers underneath the regular frizzled feathers. She has all characteristics of a silkie too, feathered feet, blue skin, blue ears, 5 toes, and a complete drama queen haha! But she does have a funky comb. She also has small muffs and a beard but her crest is lacking. I'm hoping it grows a bit longer, she's only just 3 months. The eggs said sizzle so I think a sizzle is a silkie with frizzled hard feathers and a frizzled silkie is a silkie with frizzled silkie feathers, so more like a silkie with a bad hair day lol!

I'm probably going to breed her with Snow my roo to get some really nice sizzles with big crests!

Kayla, I think you need a smooth coated sizzle to produce the rough/curly sizzles. Your sizzle when bred to a silkie cock may produce frizzled silkies.

That's awesome! :D

Thank you, Sanna! Hope you enjoyed the Little Rhody show...

Hello fellow silkie lovers. I took my son to a poultry show a couple of weeks ago. He instantly fell in love. He's decided he would like to show his silkies. He has a heart condition and can't play any contact sports so this would be something he could do! I bought some "show quality" silkies from a breeder. Could you all point me in the right direction to find a website or a SOP book about silkies so we can educate ourselves !

4H might be fun for your son (and you too).He would be considered a Cloverbud at this age.

Congratulations!!!

Thank you very much!

Thank you! I don't know what we would do without you. You have been so helpful and we appreciate all you have done for us!!

Well I have to admit I was worried about them as well. they can't figure out how to use the ramp to go up to the coop! We've tried putting them up the ramp every night but they can't seem to figure it out. Yes he was born with it. He's had several surgeries, but doing very well. He actually is getting an echo tomorrow to check his stent. He absolutely loves these chickens. I think it's going to be great for him. I just hope I got good enough quality. These little suckers have been hard to find!!
Wow. A lot of difficult days for your family.... The silkies have been a great stress reliever for me and I'm sure they have been for you. Based on these photos, the birds look like great quality.
This is Braxton and his roo, Peck. He was calling him Peck-er but I quickly changed it! He's only 6.

They all need a bath and the blue is molting but here they are. Dorothy(splash) Blanch(white) and Rose(blue).

From what I gather the showmanship is for kids a little older. I think it would be neat for him to do so I hope he shows an interest.

We almost lost one of the chicks my two broodies were sitting on, we moved them out from the main coop and I saw this one shrink wrapped, held it for a few minutes it didn't look like it was breathing or making any noise so I thought we lost it. Went out to check them yesterday afternoon and kept hearing a peeping coming from the toss out bucket. The little guy survived the night and was peeping up a storm when I got home from work. I snatched him up put him in the sink with the hot water running (not on him just for heat and humidity) unraveled him and placed him in a wad of horse leg wrap with warm water and a hair dryer. Decided that the best place was back under the broodie. went out a few hours later and he was fluffed up and chilling with the 10 other chicks.

I was so happy to see that.

That's awesome!

so question for everyone, could this help keep a white bird from becoming sunburned? I am trying to find ways to keep Snow nice and white besides his diet(already have that covered) and I have to buy this for my dog anyway.

A product specifically for hair/fur/feathers is better than one intended for skin, for example:

Here is an interesting review: http://www.natural-dog-health-remedies.com/sunscreen-for-dogs.html
Those are intended for fur. I just read the reviews, and it seems they do not recommend any of the pet sunscreens? I already have a conditioner, but I was wondering if a suncreen would help keep him white rather than his feathers turning yellow from burning. So should I use a baby sunscreen as recommended by that link? or stick with one of the better judged pet sunscreens?
