Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

I put my only Paint Cock into a project pen with all white pullets. I hatched him from a mixed batch of Catdance eggs a year and a half ago. The pullets were from my all white F1 Pen 1 Catdance breeding eleven months ago. I have no other colored Silkie males except a Catdance Porcelain cock kept in his own project pen.

This is my Paint male day old. He had one tiny black feather on his head.

This is him today. He's soiled and rough from breeding for six months and had his bum feathers trimmed for the breeding pen. He has nice paint coloring all over.

His first progeny are ALL colored. Two paint chicks, two Black, and four a kind of Partridge coloring. Gorgeous babies and completly unexpected for an all white breeding pen.

The hen is from my all White Catdance F1 Pen 1 breeding from last year. This is her first hatch. The eggs were from the white trio of pullets.

Both white chicks have unmistakable black spots.

I have no Partridge males and no Black chickens at all. I'm delighted by these eight chicks. The Paint Catdance cock has gone back into the Project pen #3. I hope to get more of the same.

Mumsy how pretty :) I had a couple of surprises like that this year too, it's so interesting, and in some cases the only way to have a better guess about what genes our birds are carrying.

Yes! Truly interesting. I'm kicking myself for wasting him for over a year. I concentrate on Whites from Sheryl Butler and Karen Larson (Catdance) stock. Both reputable breeders of White Silkies for generations. My breeding pens have been devoted to blending those two strains of Whites. It was third string White progeny with no plans to use that went into this Paint project pen.

These colored Paint/split chicks will all be banded and noted into the book and I will keep strict records of which White hens give best type in this Paint Cocks offspring. The biggest surprise to me was getting two clearly Paint chicks in this hatch. I did not think that was possible with Paint on White matches. The Blacks I was expecting. Those dark Partridge markings are intriguing. Two have an almost black background and two clearly brown background.

I love my Whites but these pretty babies will give great joy to wait, watch, and use in future projects.

The Paint/White split chicks in some close up images. The two black chicks are interesting. I hope one is a male so I can breed my only Lavender hen to him. If one is a female, I'll breed her back to her Paint sire.

The two white chicks are flecked with black down.

An interesting hatch of chicks out of an all white trio covered by my Paint cock.

Hi, I am curious what colors exactly produce a calico. I understand they are just mixed colors, but is it with any colors? I recently bought a calico rooster and would like to keep breeding that color.
