Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Sorry to be MIA for so long. ..but had to post as I am heartbroken. My white silkie roo...found him dead. Just lying there :( My silkie pullet seems so sad. She has another roo, buff mix, who grew up with them, and the yr old flock. ..but they never really integrated. Finally in same coop after months. ..but separated while free ranging. .. need to find a new one now for breeding. He was such a sweet beautiful roo.

One of our silkies also just passed one day. It was sad, it was my husbands favorite.

I am sorry you lost your guy. I recently had the same thing happen with my black rooster. He went to bed and didn't wake up. He was older so who know what happened. He was healthy and happy with his girls and then lights out.

skin colour question:

I had posted this in a different section and got no response, since this might be a breed standard thing I thought I'd try here.
I need to know what it means when my silkie, whose face was originally blue, is turning red. When I was buying a silkie at a poultry swap a breeder told me when I'm choosing a silkie to make sure their faces are blue "look for any redness" she said, but we didn't have time for me to ask her why. So can anyone tell me? I just want to rule out sickness.

Thanks!

I have two show quality Silkie hens, one is white the other one is a blue partidge, I had them with a painted roo, but he started getting grey around his neck. Not sure why, he was fall and lanky. I separated from the girls now. I am not sure if it is worth ur to try and incubate done of their eggs? I certainly don't want any chickens that look like the roaster, but the hens are just lovely, will the genetics balance out, or will I end up with ugly, lanky, ill colours silkies?

Thanks for you opinions!!

You'll likely end up with some keepers and some with undesirable traits.
I would just try to find a replacement rooster. He is half of your genetics after all, that makes him very important from a breeders standpoint.
No harm in hatching eggs from him though. Keep some nice pullets back and sell the rest as pet quality.

Good luck.

Ok, so my birds are revealing themselves more now! LOL!

I have the blue roo, and now a white (crowing) roo, and a HIGHLY suspect partridge roo.

Girls are 2 blacks, a buff, and a gorgeous paint.

Suspect boys are a splash (boo, needed that to be a girl!) and possibly a paint (yay, needed that one!) They are still too young to tell.

So my best bet for decent color combinations are:

Buff + Parti?

White + blacks/paints? (Until my little paint reveals him/her self.)

I will put the splash in with one of my split blacks (one is pure) if it ends up being a roo so I can hopefully get blue girls. Some are better quality than others, but we have to start somewhere. What I DON'T want is a bunch of mixed colors (even though I know I'm playing with fire here.)

I do have some more eggs coming this week. I just can't stop. LOL!
