Welcome to this thread! Here is another silkie thread that is a good source of info and has lots of good folks willing to answer questions. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/297632/silkie-thread/25190#post_9705482 Many of us on this thread also participate over there. You can post pictures of your birds and get good advice.

Quote: NPIP was created to erradicate, to the extent possible, salmonella. The program has always applied to small farmers and hobbyists as well as large commercial business; what is relatively recent is the program being made mandatory in many states. Currently small farms and hobbyists are more likely to be the reservoir than are large commercial operations. Typically (there are always exceptions) large commercial operations practice far more rigorous biosecurity than do smaller farms or hobbyists. The current status of required testing is almost certainly a direct result of the 2002-3 END epidemic. What is interesting is that the state most affected (California) has not gone overboard on testing requirements as have a number of other states--almost all of which were not directly impacted.

You can check the department of agriculture for any specific state in which you are interested. I know I have seen a list that shows which states require NPIP for import of birds or eggs, but don;t recall where. Pullorum-typhoid are passed both horizontally (bird to bird) and vertically (hen to egg).

Incorrect. No where does it say anything about a bonnet shape. The crest should be globular, points may be deducted if the crest is too lobed but technically, the bonnet shape IS globular. It is all in perception.

Here is my perception. Exhibit A:

What I see is a little girl with a pink bonnet on, It is uneven and there are deeply indented margins in the hood. Definition of lobe:
lobe/lōb/

Noun:
  1. A roundish and flattish part of something, typically each of two or more such parts divided by a fissure, and often projecting or hanging.

So in my opinion, A bonnet crest is not something I would look for in my birds, or in birds that I would want for myself. Hey, if you like them...that's up to you.

S.Silkies---Thank you for pointing out that what I stated was not all DQ's. True. Perhaps they are just instant DQ's (in my own mind) because they again, are not things I would ever want. Which is why I don't have many birds yet. The ones that I do have already have faults, and the more I study the more I end up getting rid of these cuties as just pet quality. Why breed something if you can't even stick to the standards?

ChicaChiuahua-I think someone already covered it. My guess would be that it is either a recessive gene that may be carried on to the next offspring or something that occured during incubation. One of my partridge has five toes, but no nail on the fifth. I know for a fact that my past incubator was inconsistent and had temp fluctuations. Only 3 of 12 hatched and there was a 90% fertility rate going into lockdown in the incubator on day 18. Sad thing is I probably won't hatch any eggs from her since I am not sure what caused it.

As Sonoran pointed out recently, one of the National champions for 2011 has a bonnet crest. I looked at the book and both eastern and western champions look somewhat bonnet shaped to me. I won't be trying to produce the bonnet shape but I definitely won't be culling for it. :)

Wow I miss a few days and whamoo the list is a hopping! I'm finding the NPIP conversation interesting as I'm considering getting certified. Now that I'm caught up with the list here are my new babies from Catdance: 19 silkies (just waiting on one porcelain to finish hatching:)
