Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

I have several young guys.
I am in love with this little guy, he has really improved since this photo was taken.  I have another little blue hatched from Kate Morreale's eggs, he's very nice as well, his crest isn't as large though.  I am thinking I may sell him.

What a beautiful crest. He is really nice. I have a young blue roo who looks different from yours and Hawkeye's. I should start taking pics of him and track the changes as he matures.

Is black underfluff as black as the top feathers all the way to the roots? What color is the feather shaft? Can someone post a photo of black under fluff?

My blacks with the bluish fluff, also have odd light s"treaks" in their foot feathers. I'll try to get pics...

Here is an article about black genetics. Some genetics gurus on The Coop took exception to a few of the points made by the author of this article.

This is what I'm wondering about. The black Ameraucana in the article does not look totally black below the wing. The leg feathers look shades of charcoal to black.... The gorgeous Cochin does not look fully black either...

Excellent idea! Pick a color!
I like this idea and am glad you started with black! I just started accumulating a few silkies trying to get back into the breed after a long time. I just sort of got what was available and some of them are nice enough but I have never had splits and my black cockerels are black/lav splits. I have one black pullet from a black pen. What can I expect from the splits? My understanding is that unless bred to a bird with a lavender gene they will just continue to exhibit the black color? One of the boys has a lighter underfluff... is he a blue/lav split or just a bad black ?This is the one with the lighter underfluff. As he is getting older it is more obvious especially on his feet.

Pullet from black pen

Black Lav split for same eggs as the first boy ( older in this picture)

I am looking for some nice pure blacks to add to my flock and am wondering how and if this boy would fit into a black breeding program.

I am also glad black is the first color discussion. I am doing BBS, but I think I want to have a Black only pen too. And use blacks to make my splashes better if they get washed out.
I have a cute little black girl and am getting two balck roosters, so I hope to pair her up with one and then the other to see which pairing throw the best offspring.
I will try to get pictures tomorrow of the pullet. I think she is pretty darn black, but now I am going to go look closer!
