Silkie cochin mix

Jaynie, thanks for clarifying. I *think* that a lot of the things said on this thread have been poorly phrased, causing additional confusion rather than merely answering a question. I know I am certainly quite capable of turning a simple answer into a confusing melange of miscommunicated information.

If one were to take the existing silkie standard and copy everything except that which refers to the silkie plumage, and replace it with the portions of the standard which refer to frizzle plumage you would have the working standard for sizzles.

Breeding them is something else, and talking/writing about them is sometimes difficult (as this thread clearly shows), as many people use terms that are not technically correct.

Hard and soft feathering is not the same as non-silkie and silkie feathering or frizzle feathering. Old English, moderns and a number of other breeds have hard feathering. Cochins, brahmas and others have soft feathering. Smooth does equate to non-frizzled.

Frizzle and cochin are not interchangable. There are many cochin breeders who neither have nor breed frizzles, and there are many frizzle breeders who work with breeds other than cochin. Frizzle can be and is recognised in the standard for every recognised breed and variety.

When one shows a frizzle, it must meet all breed and variety standards as well as having frizzled feathers according to the frizzle standard. Thus, a frizzled silkie must have silkie feathers. This is where sizzles come in, and why they are being developed as a breed, not a variety of silkies--a sizzle does not have silkie feathering.

Okay! Time to revamp this thread, lol. I have a couple of questions, if any of you still exist on this forum.

1) I had a pen of black, white, and buff bantam Cochin hens and a white Silkie hen. The roo was a white bantam Cochin.
I got:
a) White chick that grew into what looks like a bantam Cochin hen, but with beard and muffs. It has light skin, straight comb, 4 toes, and no crest. I assume she is the result of the bantam cochin roo mated with the silkie. Otherwise where would the beard and muffs come from? (Her face is much poofier now and her comb is bigger)

b) White chick that grew into a bantam Cochin hen

c) Black chick that grew into bantam Cochin hen.

2) In the same pen, I added a frizzle Cochin roo. He is second fiddle, but obviously got some action at some point. Also added a bantam chocolate Orpington hen.
The chicks produced from this pen now are coming up as:
a) White with frizzled feathers except for the primaries, light skin, 4 toes, no crest, straight comb. Is this more likely a sizzle, since the primaries are not curling?

b) BLUE chicks! Smooth, light skin, straight combs, feathered feet. Where the heck did these come from????
c) Black chicks. Look just like bantam Cochins, so assuming they are.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Holy smokes. My head is spinning. I'm trying to search site for info on breeding my white silkie hen to my white frizzled bantam cochin rooster. What can I expect the first time? How do I breed after that to continue my generations? Does the silkie have to be the roo for sex links? Any help is useful. I've posted on other threads with little help. I'm not trying to show or sell birds. These are my pets from a hatchery.

I have a little white Silkie that went broody after being with my Birchin Cochin - both banties of course. She hatched out 4 of the most beautiful birds! They have a cute little top knot like Don King and are the most gorgeous mix of gray and black. I dont have picks at this time, but I will try to post some. I was wondering if I have a new breed!

Okay, my curiosity has been struck as well.... I have a Black Cochin Hen and a Black Silkie Roo. If I breed these two, would I have Sizzles? I have been looking for another Black Cochin Roo for her mate with no luck; If these two can mate and make pretty offspring, I might just give it a try!

Neither of your birds are frizzled? If that's the case, you'll simply have silkie/bantam Cochin mixes. They'll be black, the males may or may not have some leakage depending on the parent's genetics.

I don't have pics, but just do a google. It's where the feathers bend backwards, look like the bird is getting windblown from the backside.

My F1 generation with white silky hen and silver cochin roo produced a very soft fluffy grey and one silver Cochin hen. The roos produced by this mix looked just like the silver bred to the silky. My f2 generation is just hatching and don't know what they will look like yet any guesses?
