Silkie has baby chick

Oh, please don’t be so hard on yourself, folks! I think almost everyone who has raised chicks has lost a few. My TSC used to give me the chicks that were looking rough because they knew they were going to die if they left them there, but with me to baby them, they might have a fighting chance. Some survived, some didn’t. It’s worse when they look perfectly healthy and you can’t figure out what happened, but it happens to most of us at some point. Hang in there and do your best. If you’re on here, start a thread if you have questions. This is such a great place to learn and get support from experts. The people on here are so nice! Don’t give up! ❤️

mzhof, I’m so sorry about the chicks you lost. I’m not sure if you’re planning to get more or not, but I know one lady who has one bantam hen and takes her almost everywhere in a basket. The hen even goes camping with her and her husband. Silkies are a good size for that, and they’re so sweet! She spends a TON of time with her hen. The hen spends a lot of time inside wearing a chicken diaper!

It seemed the mother got less interested in her
I really think the mother kind of unknowingly stepped on her (she was a first time mother)
In the nesting box it seemed the chick was too little to step over a piece of wood to get water so therefore the pet crate...maybe the mother got disoriented in the pet crate and couldn't get comfortable...everything looked fine last night when she went to sleep
Oh well live and learn...its just that the chic was so dam adorable!!
Good possibility the mom didn't know how to care for the chick
My first broody let her baby die and I also think she stepped on the chick. I keep a close eye on Elsa because this was her first time too. I think so
animals like humans some are better mothers than others.

Here is Elsa and her babies in the coop. I have a grow out pen in there that has 23 babies I got from My Pet Chicken on June 18th. Have them in it because they don't have a Mommie to raise them .So that is my job and I can't be with them all the time but when I am I let them out.

Beautiful! I LOVE My Pet Chicken! That’s where we got our first chicks years ago when we lived in a neighborhood and needed specific ones. I had one with pasty butt, and customer service walked me through what to do. They’re awesome.

Thanks. I do plan to get as few more silkies just to keep the buff one left company. She's so little I'm afraid to put her with my 4week olds. And I'm not sure she's eating all that well since she's not getting any bigger since last week. I tried putting my smallest meekist one with her but she literally flew the coop to get back to the rest.

Awwwww... get her some friends then. Every Silkie I’ve met has been so sweet! Enjoy your babies.
