MGA so very sorry the chick passed away Not all broodies make good mothers, not even all silkies. I do think the mother stepped on the chick- maybe pacing back & forth. First timers sometimes don't have a clue what to do with chicks.

Well so much into my experience into animal husbandry
The egg we had under Abby never hatched
At 25 days I opened it to see if something developed and it had developed into a chicken but it was all dried up
So much for that!
And the eggs underneath Henrietta they never developed into anything guess they were not fertile (we thought they were!!
We've learned a lot from our experience and we can use the knowledge later on if we decide to get another rooster... thanks to you all for the information and sympathies!

PS: I want to get another rooster (Bantam Mille de fleur d'uccle --spelling?) just like we had but I haven't convinced my wife Cindy...she does most of the work with the chickens!
We'll see if I can convince her
anybody have a male bantam Mille de Fleur D'Uccle like the one in my avatar they want to get rid or of or for sale!
I see mypetchickens.com has them but the amount you have buy are 6- 4.10 each and then shipping for $36
Maybe I can find rooster locally last time I traveled about 2 hours to get him!
