From looking at silkie pictures, I thought they were a bit weird looking, but wanting to see the real thing I ordered only a few and wish I had gotten nothing but Silkies. Mine are not pampered darlings, but run around free-ranging with the other 30 chickens of 7 breeds. They get wet and muddy. They manage to roost 4' up, which isn't easy for them. Unfortunatly for me, out of the 5 only one is a girl, yet the roosters don't fight. They have the sweetest nature in the world and are so cuddly. My bantam cochin girls are cuddly also but I have to watch my eyes, they peck every freckle and scratch they see. The silkies sing at night when going to bed.
After mourning my beloved cat of 17 years for a few years, I was ready for a new kitten, by DH said no....not as long as his cat was still alive. So I got baby chicks instead ..... 70 of them, now down to 35 by virtue of selling excess and the help of a sneaky fox or raccoon or both maybe. DH would like the numbers to be down to 0, but that is not happening
I have rarely met any animal I didn't like but don't think I would want any NN. I thought the Dark Cornish were sort of weird looking chickens, so I got some of them (bantam) and they are great. The cockerel is spoiled rotten and the pullets are sweet little egg layers, as are the Japanese.
I love all the chickens and try to get them all equal attention but the silkies are special, and everybody that sees them wants one. Also not happening yet anyway.
For the guy that eats silkies: You must raise them to have them to eat???? I understand from reading that the flesh is black....do you seriously eat black flesh???? Maybe you are just trying to be controversial ?????
