Silkie Haters

I used to like them.. but the more I see them.. the novelty has worn off and they're just.. blah... not cute enough to warrant taking up my coop space with their rare-egg-laying ways... now I start supposed 'i-hate-silkie' threads (and get tantrums thrown at me)

Not to say I would never have one.. I would get one as a walking incubator :p

you have a right to express your opinion...and so does everyone else... and I respect your opinion

I like that my House Silkie, Sophie likes to lay in my lap with her little legs kicked out to the side of her. She has been quite the Chicken ambassador for both Silkies and Standard Chickens alike. People get interested in what she is and see that chickens have a personality, that they are not dumb mindless scratches of dirt. People who wouldn't think twice about a chicken see a Silkie and start asking questions, learning about chickens in general, learn that their is almost every color of the rainbow of chickens and eggs etc. People start holding them and then understanding they are an important part of the world and if you have empathy for something it becomes important. So if you don't like Silkies that's fine, but do appreciate what Silkies do for all chickens.
Mine are all pretty friendly, even my breeders, they all are good egg layers and some of mine free range with the big chickens. Some of my Silkie Roos will even beat up the big chickens..... I think my big chickens are taken back by all the whirling fluff.... LOL

I loves my silkie, Forrest, featured in my avatar in her Big Bird Hair phase. (Yup, she's named after Gump because she runs goofy and we love yelling, "Run, Forrest, run!" Plus she's not exactly the brightest egg in the carton.) However, she is also the first one to greet me when I visit the chicken yard, she was a wonderful mama to her first and only, so far, clutch of chicks, marches to her own drummer, is the only hen I own who likes my little Serama boy, and always, always makes me smile.

LONG LIVE THE SILKIES!!

Note: I don't have probs with the silkie haters as long as they don't have probs with me alovin' my silkie. And, also, some of them make me laugh... (Die Silkie Die...

I LOVE Cotton the Silkie Rooster in the "The Natural History of the Chicken" a film by Mark Lewis.
Cotton the Silkie Rooster and his owner, Karin Estrada are awesome!
I can't quite explain it, but watching Karin's interview fills my heart with joy. The swimming pool scene is over the top. The movie is available in 6 parts on YouTube.

I don't hate them but I don't think I'd want one. I'm not too big on the fancy breeds, I like a more utilitarian chicken, and I prefer the look of one, too. I like looking at pics of other people's fancy breeds, though.

We have an old silkie that is the best walking incubator around! Last year, when we received a box full of cold baby chicks she didn't even question she was their mommie when we put her and the 25 little squirmers in a box. Not only is SHE the best walking incubator around - our silkie rooster runs a close second. He loves to make sure the baby chicks are tucked into a nesting box for the night, then goes silkie momma and lastly he posts himself right at the door.

Our silkies are not wimps. They roost - and biddie can stand up to the largest rooster. Before we were given Silkie roo, Biddie's boyfriend was the biggest rooster I'd ever seen. She even hatched a mess of their baby chicks. One result was a roo, almost as large as his daddy.

I love our silkies - but I'd never shame them by turning them into toys. They are useful chickens.

oh thank god! that is exactly what i want to hear!! i've read about silkie roos sometimes stealing chicks to raise themselves, so this is great news. i can't afford a fancy incubator right now, and i can't afford for my standard hens to take a break to raise a clutch. SILKIE NURSERYMAIDS TO THE RESCUE! yay!
