Silkie Holiday Hatch-a-long

Ya I would try the carton then. I'm not very experienced but I'm sure most people would agree with that.

omgosh, I am getting confused, gal I bought eggs from told me to lay em down so they have more "wiggle room" so now I am on the fence again, do you guys know the reasoning why I would put in carton vs lay down? I am going to be a spazz until this little egg arrives, God willing a nice live little fluffy buff silkie!!!

I've heard of people hatching in cartons. I've never tried it, but when they hatch laying down it sure looks to me like they need wiggle space to kick the shell off. It can take them all day or sometimes longer to completely hatch, and in the process they sort of roll around as they work their way out. I don't see how they could do that in a carton.

Edited to add: you can find videos of both methods on youtube. I just watched one of a chick hatching in a carton. It still seems to me that it's easier for them to get out of the shell laying down, but lots of people do it both ways

We tried the egg carton hatch in a Styrofoam egg carton. We cut out the holes and placed the eggs in with the air sacks up. Problem is, with the humidity the eggs got "stuck" onto the Styrofoam and couldn't wiggle. I know this is why we lost the white silkie, died trying to free itself, and it may have been why we lost another sizzle. I would not do this egg carton thing again. They do need wiggle room and if the egg gets adhered to the carton it's going to struggle to get out. Next time we'll place them onto the grate in the incubator.

@KV Silkies what did you decide to do? Egg carton or lay on side?
hi, my little egg is laying down on some drawer liner for traction.... so far so good I guess. I don't really have any action going on, last time I candled, on lockdown it was still moving aroudn. today is day 20... I am off work tomorrow and no internet.... so we'll see what I come back with for news on wednesday. I am on pins and needles here dying to hear a noise or see something happening! tomorrow is day 21 though, so to keep myself from sitting and staring at the egg all day will be the problem! lol come on baby HATCH!

My little eggs aren't doing anything :hit

They were supposed to hatch the 1st, in the evening, but there's no action at all. My temp and humidity have been good, and I calibrated my thermometer and hygrometer before I started incubating. They're my own eggs, so no shipping. I dunno what's up with them. I've had chicks hatch late, but not this late
