Silkie is yawning non stop, help!

One of my Brahmas just dropped dead....we were watching her in the the run and she held her beak open a few times like she was panting....she stood on one leg and looked to be trying to find a place to lay an egg maybe....or lay down...it’s hot here today. Then she dropped dead. I’m freaking out!!! I checked her vent and there is runny yellowish brown poop...no sign of mites/lice. What do I do??
Oh No! I'm so sorry to hear this:hugs

It's been a few days and no more deaths....thank GOD! My poor hens arrived at Cornell University this morning and they will be performing the necropsy today. I'm anxious for results. They have a poultry specialist so I'm hopeful that I can learn what happened and prevent it from happening again. I'm so grateful for a resource like Cornell - they charge $85 for up to 3 birds and it was $15 to ship them overnight. I bought a cooler at Home Depot because I was so short on time - but it worked beautifully. I will update when I hear back - thank you everyone for your help and support.

Cornell is a wonderful resource, I'm glad you were able to send them in. They have a very good poultry lab. They also have an "atlas" of Avian diseases, not every disease is listed with photos, but they have images of the most common or concerning ones. These do include necropsy/dissection photos so if something like that bothers you, I would not look at them (just a warning). For me, it's interesting to see what is going on, it's a way to learn more about chickens. http://partnersah.vet.cornell.edu/avian-atlas/search/disease/502#/

Please keep us posted.

I don’t have the final results however I did receive this initial summary “The Brahma had a very severe egg yolk peritonitis that may be mixed up with some tumors but they will confirm the tumors with histopathology (looking at tissues under the microscope). The Silkie was not showing much except for thick bloody cecal cores which is usually associated with coccidiosis. I had to leave before they got further into looking at the organs of the Silkie. They both also had a lot of lice.”

I checked my entire flock tonight and can’t find any lice?! I sprayed them with Poultry Protector spray anyway..I’ve been reading everyone’s opinions on how to treat lice and I’m so very confused as to what’s safe and what’s not. I also am not sure if I should treat my entire flock for cocci yet, none of them are showing any signs.

I am sorry for your loss.
If I were you I would start Corid asap.
It will not hurt if they don't have coccidiosis.
Poultry protector will not cure your lice problem.
Get some permethrin and spray every bird and the whole coop asap.
Remove all bedding too.
Repeat this spraying of everything in one week.

Thank you so much. I will go to TSC tomorrow and get Corid and Permethrin. I’m assuming that it won’t interact with Valbazen that I’ve already given them once orally? Makes me so sad that I possibly could’ve saved my silkie with Corid and so mad that the vet didn’t test or tell me about it.

No it won't hurt to give both.
