Silkie or did they play me?

Good morning! I bought a few silkies from a hatchery in queen creek AZ (AZhomestead & Hatchery) All the pictures showed fluffy silkies, but as mine got older it started getting feathers. I tried to communicate with her and she said I was inexperienced that it was a silkie, just a satin kind. I was just under the impression that if I bought full bred silkies they would be fluffy & she never specified it was a “satin”. Am I in the wrong or did I get played & paid high silkie prices for a mix? 😢🤦🏻‍♀️

Some people call them satin silkies, saying it's just another feather variety of silkies (like silked frizzles), some say it's a project "breed" that's supposed to be exactly like a silkie but with normal feathers. Some say there's no such thing as a satin and they're all just silkie mixes.

Whatever you choose to believe, the fact is that it shouldn't have been sold as just a silkie. Silkies are silkies, and they're meant to have silkied feathers as stated in the standard. This bird is not that. Even for a satin it's not a very good quality one.

@Cloverr39 is right on this, there are satins that are silkies, they should have all the traits of a silkie but normal feathering. They should have the same type, lack of leakage, 5 toes, etc as a silkie. At best yours is a pet quality satin.

I can't speak to it being a silkie mix, or just a lower quality satin. Some people take a lot of pride in their satins, they breed them for years and years to meet the SOP of a silkie but with non-silkied feathers.

You're in the right and she's in the wrong.
The majority of people still believe a silkie is a silkie feathered silkie type bird. That bird is neither.
Don't worry about your "inexperienced". What she meant to say is that she's following a tread that most don't and never will. Your "inexperience" means you didn't jump on the crazy train others have.

Yeah, that's a silkie mix. This is not a pure silkie. Likely one that should've been sold under their barnyard mix. I'd push to get a partial refund down to the barnyard mix price instead.

I contacted her just to let her know, never asked for a refund (fell in love w/ the little thing) but her response was rude. I left a review on her yelp account which prompted a ruder response. She stated “This person unfortunately does not know anything about the silkie breed, satin is a type. Please do your research before leaving a negative review about something you are not experienced in” 🥹

Thank you. I’m learning more everyday that passes, but the pictures on her website and this little one just did not match. 😂

He’s a cutie and love bug 💕 Just wanted to know for future references in case I get more silkies & know what to expect. A fluff ball or a feather fluff ball 😂 Her responses just confused me so I wanted to learn more about them.

Thank you! I messaged her just to let her know, didn’t ask for a refund or anything like that. She got ruder when I left a yelp review. Oh well, deff not getting any more animals from AZ homestead & hatchery. I was just curious on what happened with this “silkie”.
