What a great video, and like others have said, after actually watching, Im thinking I might be able to do that one day....maybe. You mentioned that the silkies plucked easier that other breeds, is that right? It seemed that you put the bird in the hot water for a long time, apparently it wasnt too long as it plucked perfectly. And I had no idea silkies had dark skin!! ewww.....

I, too, would love to see a video of the actual cleaning.

What a great video!!

Thank Halo. The water was a little warm (around 160 to 170) and I
think I dipped it for 20 seconds. Silkie feathers come out easy because
they are more fluff than feather. Cornish and turkeys aren't bad either
but the stems of the feathers go in a lot deeper so the scald is more
important. Ducks and young standards are a pain sometimes.

We have a ridiculous amount of meatbirds left over in the barn. We
have 6 turkeys, 5 Cornish, and around 15 fryers. Trouble is our freezers
are PACKED and we are only a family of 3 people and 3 dogs.

Anyone want some young standard roos?

I already tried three different ways to do this, but those scared eyes just kept looking at me and of course, all those beautiful BO feathers. So, I still have all those roos eating up my feed.

I must be a true "chicken" or maybe I am just your regular "suburb girl!" whose pretending to be a farmer?

You may have given me courage, though. If your young person can do that, maybe I can, too??!

Now, where is that little hatchet.....

I always have a hard time with the killing... I'm the one that kisses them on the head and thanks them for feeding us.

But once the deed is done, the biologist in my kicks in and I'm right in there up to my elbows!

We have sworn that we will get a plucker next year, since we can't seem to get the boys to do it. I'll process a couple of birds, but more than 10 and I want a plucker!!!!

We processed 26 birds that day in under 4 hours from start to finish with
MoodusNewChick, PerfectlyPolish, Drumstick, and me. We were on a
mission.

I've built a few pluckers but did not use one that day. Quail and silkies
pluck so easy by hand. The other birds make a plucker worthwild.

When me and my son process we usually just do 3 to 5 at a time.
