I can't keep roosters. If I could I would definitely keep him. I am sad to not be able to keep him. I totally understand that they might end up as dinner. But are silkies good for meat? I can't see them being meat birds, but I am very new to chickens. Thanks for your help and info.

Their meat is excellent. I slaughtered mine around six months old and being six months old rather than the six- to eight-week old mush you buy in a grocery store makes it very good. I skinned and deboned them, so didn't deal with the skin or the black bones. The meat is black where it lays against the black bones, but otherwise grey. I cooked it in a curry so I didn't have to notice the black streaks in the meat. I made a soup out of the bones and leftover bits. I have pictures of some Silkie carcasses if anyone is interested in seeing what their meat looks like, but I understand this is primarily a pet-chicken forum and most would be horrified to see them.

Sadly, about half the cute little Silkies hatched will be cockerels and they don't have a place in most people's set ups. They will end up as dinner somewhere.

This is the only photo I have sent from the breeder. I've bought the birds but they are not home yet. I was hoping someone could help me guess. By the round crest of the far buff silkie id guess that one a female but I'm really not sure bout the other two? Middle buff looks roo ish to me. I can see a difference in the crest shape from the far buff I'm thinking is a female but I'm not certain. Was hoping someone could tell by this pic or at least throw out a guess.

In china they do eat them, their skin is black which many people find off-putting to eat, but yes, you can eat Silkie meat.

Yep, it's their main purpose in China and in some other countries is for their meat, they believe that Silkie meat is good for your body.

Just a guesstimate , I'd say the buff in front is a roo, just going on hairdo.

I thought the same thing! Any thoughts on the others? I thought the buff in back is female based onthe crest. The silver I'm not sure.

It's hard to say from the pic, but the back grey one looks like a roo to me.
