so far I have used a little giant ( spiked to 106) a brower top hatch ( I had to make it a sweater to keep the temp steadier) I got about 20% hatch out of it but I had lots of crooked toes. I have a genesis I found for $25 out of 9 shipped sussex eggs I hatched 6. out of 6 shipped polish 1 out of 30 serama ( notorious to hatch ) I got 3 1 surrvived. for unshipped eggs if its fertile it hatches. now I have a dickey and my first eggs are going in today

My hen has gone broody, sitting on 1 egg.

Can I assume she will get off the egg to go get some food and water. She seems happy enough, just wondering as I've never had a hen go broody on me before.

I would worry too, but she will, she has to survive to hatch the eggs and raise the chicks! I think they sneak away for food and water when they think its safe and nobodys watching, Ive never caught a broody off the nest but had evidence they did.. good luck!

Many thanks! I am sure she is eating, first time I have encountered a broody hen........

General rule of thumb, broodies leave the nest just as the sun comes up and just before everyone beds down. Every once in a while you have to physically remove one to reinforce that they need to take a break. Some will leave the nest for several minutes to grab the opportunity to dust bathe. Many of mine wait until I open the coop, that way they know the doors are open and if they want a dust bath they can run out to grab one.
