Silkie thread!

As you can see here is my free range tractor, easy to assemble made with 2 4 x6 and 2 4 x 8 s it took 6 1/4 inch pieces, 5 on the body one across the middle of 8 foot pvc pieces held in place with brackets you use for plumbing and misc.pieces of pvc with elbows for the square door. The zip ties hold it together. We happen to have this plastic off a construction job and coasters we had lying around, since the only predators we worry about around here are hawks(at least for the moment

) this works great. I haven't lost a silkie since I built it. We also used one pieces of scrap molding for the back for extra support....hopefully this helps this whole thing costs us a few dollars to make but we had much of the materials around the barn. It is simple to make and the silkies love it. I love that the hawks don't seem to be hanging around anymore since they haven't had a meal around here.

What is the black material? Is it temporary fencing? I need to eventually make a tractor, you have opened my eyes up to a new idea.

Anyone ship chicks to Minnesota?
I do. :D I have a shippment going there next week if the weather is good.
Nori is laying soft shelled and rubber eggs. I have oyster shell for her but she isn't touching it... What can I do to boost her calcium intake so she doesn't bind again? She has been laying daily! Ofcourse, it's AFTER I took her off the layer feed
barnie.gif
I ferment their feed, I do have some pure bone meal available but I have heard some bad things about bone meal. Can I boil one of her egg shells and grind it up to a powder and just mix that in with her breakfast?
Hard boiled eggs. Mash up shell and all.

They just can't see well with their big crests. I had a couple hens that had very poor crests and were able to see just like any other breed. Those girls were quite fast and ran for cover if there was anything to worry about.
I don't think it's a bad idea to free range. Just keep an eye on them. Any chicken can get snagged at any time, but the Silkies would probably be the ones to go first because of their vision problem. You can help them out by trimming their crest, that way they'll see better.

Can you post us a link to the thread? I have a gazillion pictures I can post.

I have a partridge that free ranges he is like a watch dog for the free range flock. Mr. B will flog anything well mainly my seven year old son. Landon can't make it around the house before that rooster puts him back on the porch.LOL :)

One of my babies (they'll be 2 months next week) in our new flower garden next to the silkie pen. This little chick has the cutest little face! His/her crest is growing straight up. Most of the others are developing flatter bonnet 'dos, but not this kid. One chick has a heavily pinned crest that flops over to one side, giving him quite a 'windblown' look. The thing is with these chicks is that they're SO SLOW to feather out their feet. When I first got mine I was afraid they'd have skimpy foot feathering, as they had bare toes for a while, but it finally came in in earnest around three months. I know these guys will have to get it eventually, they had heavy 'foot fluff' as hatchlings. They're going through a bare middle toe period right now, but they're starting to get 'sprouts' all down the toe, so they won't be bare long. I've integrated them with my adult flock (it's very warm here in SC now), and it went very nicely. No fighting, they were accepted as part of the flock almost immediately. At night they snuggle up under the wings of the cockerel and the pullets

(the hens trying to be broody on nothing in there don't take too kindly to that, however)

So pretty. The red flowers with her white feathers really play off each other.

The coop is so pretty! Do the girls ever sit on the front porch? He did such a good job on this.

I am going to die!!

My blue hen Iris and her 3 foster children were just on the news.

Channel 8 news invited us to bring a couple of animals to their station, so our boss ended up taking Sassy the pony and one of my Silkies & her chicks. So exciting.

I just watched the news clip...too bad there's something wrong with the broadcasting because there was no volume.

Need to call Comcast, this has been happening with several channels lately...

Great pictures!

Getting excited! My first show coming up Saturday. Reading conflicting info- fluffing the cushion. Some things say comb opposite of feather lay, some say comb the way the feathers grow. I'm getting manic about it. Poor Yoshi- I keep going out and picking him up the way a judge would, putting him in cage backwards, etc. OHHHH I hope he's not too thin! Worry Worry Worry. This is gonna be fun!

Sounds like you have a case of the pre-show jitters. Hang in there. You'll do a great job!

LOOK how much this boy grew in TWO months! 1ST Pic is 2/1/13 he is 3 1/2 months old. 2ND Pic was taken today. HE IS GOTTEN SO BIG!

He's so handsome.

Sooooooooo, this morning I get up and go to let the girls out like I do every morning. I turned to go get some scratch for them out of the garage. UR ur URRRRR. I snapped my head back around. Who did that?! Alice (in wonderland or Cooper)? Elvira (or Elvis)? UR ur UR ur URRRRR!

I can't believe my eyes. Oh no, my sweet little girl, Bubbles, just crowed at me!
barnie.gif
She's a he.

To my fellow newbies out there - This proves to me what the BYC Silkie gurus here have been telling us. You can't, with certainty, sex a Silkie until they're older. Bubbles will be 4 months old Monday (my avatar pic). I've questioned the sex of two of the girls but I thought for sure Bubbles was a pullet. Oh well. We'll see how this develops before making any rash decisions.

I hope you can keep a roo, honestly they aren't that loud if you lock them in the coop. My friend has one and she lives in a neighborhood where the houses are very close together. He doesn't bother anyone.
