Silkie thread!

are silkies good egg layers? To me they seem ornamental besides the fact they are broody machines. I know their eggs are smaller but do you get eggs once a day?

I've got enough blacks, partridge and will have enough whites when these newest chicks grow up. I need to work on getting buffs and I would love to have lavender but it's hard to get the eggs.

I rarely see any offered in the swaps. When I do i'm always too late to get them.

You don't want lavender hatching eggs, they are still too hard to hatch when they remain in place. Shipping would pretty much guarantee a non hatch. I've wanted an opportunity to say this, anyone selling and shipping lavender eggs at this time are either clueless to the hatching issues or know about it and are doing it strictly for the money.

Worst morning in my life today, I had baby silkie chicks about 15 or so in my screen front proch and a coon chewed thru the screen. The babies wore in a cage on a table. The coon manage to drop the cage and the cage broke apart notthing was left only a small tail. My hearts broken. All I did this morning was cry:hit. Just talking about makes my eyes water up.

Can't a mange how scared they must of been and I wasn't there to save them, I feel horrible. As a mommie.

I will second the difficulty in hatching lav eggs. I'm at day 21 on my 3rd attempt right now and every color BUT the lavenders has at least pipped...no surprise. I've only manage to hatch 1 lav split out of more than 2 dozen lav/lav split eggs. I'm giving it one more shot with a batch of lav/lav split eggs that I set yesterday. If nothing works out this time...I give up!

Why are Lavender eggs harder to hatch? A seller I bought eggs from included them as extras and only one developed and hatched.

Check out the Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie thread if you haven't already. There is a lot of discussion about the difficulty in hatching lavenders, but I don't think anyone provides a definitive answer as to why. I think I read that others have difficulty hatching out lavenders in some other breeds, too.
