Silkie thread!

Need advice picking a mate for this little Silkie. I have only one of this color which I am guessing is Partridge. What would be the best color to match her to. I have blue, grey or black ( also have cuckoo and lav but would guess these would not produce opitimal results with the part. color) Also what do you guys think of the quality? She/He is about 6 wks old.

I'm so sorry! Coons are amazingly good at getting into places we think are safe. You are not a bad mommie... but unfortunately a wiser one. Anyone who hasn't lost a chicken to a coon either has their flock in the equivalent of Fort Knox or is very, very lucky. I feel for you! Hugs!

I've got enough blacks, partridge and will have enough whites when these newest chicks grow up. I need to work on getting buffs and I would love to have lavender but it's hard to get the eggs.

I rarely see any offered in the swaps. When I do i'm always too late to get them.

You don't want lavender hatching eggs, they are still too hard to hatch when they remain in place. Shipping would pretty much guarantee a non hatch. I've wanted an opportunity to say this, anyone selling and shipping lavender eggs at this time are either clueless to the hatching issues or know about it and are doing it strictly for the money.

You are exactly right! Buy them already hatched or adults. Then you know exactly what you're getting.

Very cute but the chick you say is lavender does not look to be lavender.

I didnt think so either but the woman advertised it as a Lavender an she said she didnt know what color the Partridge was that she's never seen a silkie chick striped like that. so my sources werent that great.

Why are lavendar eggs hard to hatch? I've already experienced this, frankly, have not gotten a good hatch on any silkie eggs. I bought 24 eggs from a neighboring state, and hatched 1 chick....a buff...to say I'm disappointed is putting it mildly. I have a sportsman incubator, and hatch last 3 days in another incubator. Its frustrating....

I have to say, the buff chick so far is perfect in every way, so I'm glad for that, but it was an expensive chick!

If I want silkies in the future, I will only buy chicks, not eggs...lesson learned..

That chick cost me $100.

Its not absolutely known why they can be hard to hatch. But it does appear to involve the lav gene since people raising lavs in other breeds also experience the problem.

Black split to lav seems to provide the best chance of hatching. I've not heard whether breeding after that point to get lavenders helps hatchability rates go up or not.
