Silkie thread!

So it's supposed to get down to about 33° F a couple of nights this weekend.
I'm not worried about my BO's, but how well will my Silkies hold up?
Should I put a heat lamp in the coop, or plastic on part of the run to give them somewhere to take refuge?
This will be my first winter with the flock.

So long as they can get under cover and the coop is relatively draught free , they will be fine. Heat lamps can be very dangerous and won't help them to become ' cold hardy '.

I was planning on cleaning the coop a bit and then closing the window, so there should be no drafts.
I actually provided a screw mounting for a heat lamp, so that it could not fall and start a fire, but I understand the part about making them cold hardy.
Thanks for the advice as always!

We have our first frost warning for Friday night/Saturday morning and we are going to be out of town. Sure hope my babies do ok.

We have a frost warning for Fri also. Last winter we had no heat in the Silky coop, large fowl house or the turkey house. My Salmon Faverol is the only one who had had a problem. Silkies fared very well.

I'm in a predicament. ...

I dont k ow if my pen area run is big enough for my silkies. I have 14 (8 silkies, 4 sizzles, and 2 s.g)

The pen is a wire chicken wire the 50 food one. Is that ok? I'd let free range but me neighbors an idiot lol.

I plan on not allowing my sizzles eggs to hatch. I can tell sizzles eggs apart as they are lrger. I like them but don't want too many. S.G I want more of. I have a grey and white. Hope to put the white with my blue and black hens and even a sizzle since that be cool.

It's so confusing keeping track of genetics lol.

My girls are always saving animals. Last weekend the youngest went off with dad to the show to compete. They came home with another rescue horse.

I've told her that if she keeps bringing horses home we will have to buy a bigger property. The local feed store know she's a softie, last week she went in and paid for the last 2 native finches that were caged inside the shop, took the cage outside and released them. Her Narny would have been proud, as I was.
" blessed are the gentle for they shall inherit the earth " .
Thanks for telling me that! I love that she did that for the finches.

I made this home made incubator.

thanks for posting this! i was wondering if people made these. i looked on pinterest but only came up with brooders. what are the rubber band things for? does it have a little fan for airflow? i dont even know if that is necessary, i just always see it as an option on the store bought ones. How do you keep the humidity consistent? is there a gauge? do you just turn them yourself? what an awesome unit? thanks for the inspiration!

Those are just paper towel roll cut up, its to keep the eggs from rolling. But I use egg cartons to incubate mine now, I've had netter hatch rate with them. I turn them myself which all that involves is proping the egg carton up on the other side. No I dont have a fan, you could install one. But this would be considered a still air incubator. I've never used one with air flow. Below the paper towel and the wire mesh floor there is a egg carton where I put water and a sponge. That keeps the humidity pretty consistent. My thermometer also ready humidity levels.

Muffin cases also work , to stop eggs roll oping around in the bator. It also makes clean up easier. :)
