Silkie thread!

Here's some pictures of my one and only silkie. She's(?) 11 weeks now!

I like the coloring! Where did you get her? Mine are 7 almost 8 weeks old and one started crowing! At least I know he's a boy now! Lol!

You can wrap the bird in a plastic bag and put in the fridge until you mail it. Cold, not frozen. I've kept a few of mine over the weekend, it's not a problem. If your vet is willing he can draw blood and send it to Texas A&M poultry division for pcr testing. Live chicken blood.

I don't know what pcr testing is but for many chicken diseases there is no way to test in advance to diagnose and that only necropsy is definitive - and sometimes not even then when you read the gobbly-gook scientific terms on the necropsy reports. What Calif a/g colleges want really is an ailing bird that is not really severe yet and then want to monitor its symptoms and then have an immediate fresh death in the classroom for the necropsy. A carcass kept cold over a weekend is not preferred and unfortunately for us the euthanization was on a Friday with no one present at the college to receive the carcass on a Friday. There was no way I was giving up our ailing pet as a guinea pig in a classroom to possibly die alone so we kept her until the end at the vet's office. Our vet is so humane and tender with all animals (he hatches turtle eggs - bless him) that when he finally comes to a decision for euthanizing we know its a difficult decision and last resort for him. His wife loves chickens and he always takes pictures of our rare breeds and forwards them to her!

Animals never get sick or die at a convenient time ever - otherwise I would've hand-delivered the bird to the college myself. Mailing the dry-ice well-wrapped carcass is a secondary option but even an overnight delivery has aspects of decomposition for the necropsy that might interfere with a good report. Dare I hope to never face this issue again - sigh?

Since my husband cannot understand my love for my girls thought you all might be more understanding. He calls it my midlife crisis. But her is my girl Azul

The idea for chickens was mine but DH is 200% their #1 FAN!!!! It must be love as he cleans their poop, gathers and records their eggs, feeds them at 6 a.m., gives them mid-day treats, and locks them up at night!!!! These were supposed to be my chores but he's completely taken over - cute to watch him carry on conversations with them too. And get this - I asked him if he ever wanted more Silkies after these pass on (because, face it, Silkies do require a little bit of extra care) he said he couldn't ever imagine our backyard without Silkies in it! It wasn't an instant love with him but before a year went by he had taken over every aspect of chickeneering.

Haha thanks! And she was just a TSC chick that I happened to recognize the breed. Yeah, it seems that crowing or egg laying are the surest way to know with these birds!
Adorable and look like hens.
Oh I do hope so!

One of my favorite of my silkies (shh don't tell the others) is broody I think! I slipped some EE and then some EE/silkie eggs under her. The rooster of both kinds of eggs is a silkie, so I look forward to the silkie/EE/silkie.
