Silkie thread!

I have not heard this. The only trouble I've had with the vaulted skulls are during hatch time. Sometimes the vaulted skull makes it harder for them to get their head under their wing to pip the egg properly. Most of the silkie eggs that do not hatch are very vaulted when I eggtopsied them. But I do like how fluffy it makes them look! I've had no head pecking issues in my silkie flock though.

The fluffy bonnets are adorable on the Silkies, However I've been happy to have my Partridge Silkie with the flatter skull since learning a while back how vulnerable Silkies are to even the slightest head injury. Even other Silkies can peck each other on the head. My two Silkie girls are particularly aware of keeping their heads out of harm's way of each other and other hens' beaks. I've even re-homed bullying LF just to keep my Silkies safe from other assertive breeds of chickens. The older my LF got the nastier they became and we didn't wait for injuries to occur before we re-homed them. The only LF we kept was our Blue Wheaten Ameraucana (my avatar) who continues being kind to the Silkies and non-combative.

That is correct. Vaulted skull birds are more susceptible to peck injuries. The brain is just under the skin and is not afforded the protection of the skull, that non vaulted birds have.

I love your posts Fancychooklady! You always back up your posts with great references!!!

Wat color are these 2 babies
These look like the normal Partridge Silkies - the one on the left looks like our pullet as a juvenile and the one on the right is looking like a cockerel with that extra deep coloring in the wings and tail. Our boy was beautifully colored at 6 months - hated to rehome him he was so sweet!

My first egg from my sweet little patridge silkie ms wig,it's the tiny white egg in the middle, 22 grams

Silkies are one of the largest bantams and lay a pretty decent size egg. Our girls lay consistent 1.25 oz eggs. One of our Leghorn's first eggs was only 1.5 oz!!!

Hi everyone! I have a Silkie question regarding the standard comb appearance on young roos. Is this what the comb should look like?

What a cutie! Have I got a cute little Black hen for him - haha! Although my Partridge girl has pretty turquoise earlobes, my Black Silkie has more bluish-blackish earlobes. What color is your Silkie's lobes?

She is 17 weeks old

Really, that's great! So maybe I will have an egg in only 7 more weeks! I will be soooo eggcited! ;)

Thank you for this information! I love learning new things and I have not heard this before. My flock is only silkies and they are still young (various ages, up to 9/10 weeks). I will keep an eye out for any bullying or head pecking. Thanks again.
