Silkie thread!

I've found that regular sized chickens (LF) can be agressive toward silkies especially if they're still young and small. I have my silkies and LF chickens in separate coops and let them free range on different days, too.

I would not put young silkies with big chickens. They are too defenseless & may get picked on. I don't even like putting full grown silkies with larger breeds. I had barred rocks with my silkies for awhile & they tended to bully the silkies so I found a new home for the barred rocks.

So keeping them together would be a poor idea, OK.

What about getting chicks now and expecting them to be ready for a Wisconsin winter?

I need to build a winter coop/run anyway and would be up for a divided setup.

I have 5 silkies from a breeder. Two buff, two white and one blue(or black). The blue one is a roo. Is it likely that any of the buff or white pullets are genetically related to the roo? I plan to keep him, but I'm not wanting them inbreeding. I'm a total newbie to the color genetics thing. Here they are.

Thanks for any info!
Here's a thought - ask the breeder if they are related.

Opening the coops this morning, our "Powderpuff" has about 6 babies under her, you can see one on the right side, she just looked very mommyish and precious at the moment in the morning sun coming in the coop...

This is her on the right, she's a doll baby!

I just thought someone here could give me a quick yes or no on the possibility. Guess I came to the wrong thread.
Hholly, I don't think Sylvester meant that to be smart or rude at all. That really is the best suggestion in this case, as none of us know :) But, they probably aren't directly related otherwise the colors would be messed up, right? Like they wouldn't be purely white, buff, and blue. :idunno

Put Bathing Chickens into the BYC search field. Tons of stuff should pop up. As for drying, I think most people use hair dryers for their silkies. Good luck!
