Silkie thread!

Hello everyone... I hope it's ok that I post here. We have one Silkie Bantam. My boyfriend thinks they are adorable and had to have one. lol My question is, aren't there different breeds of Silkies? Or no? There are many different looking ones. Can I tell what she may look like when she grows up by what she looks like now?

Thank you!

Silkies come in different varieties, like non bearded and bearded and different colors. You can most likely tell which color your chick will be just by looking at images of color varieties on Google. Or, you could post a pic and we could probably tell you (and we just like chick pics) :)

Thanks you guys. :) I'll get some pictures of him..erm, her... in a little bit. I got it at TSC and the sign just said 'Silkie Bantam'... so I have NO idea what it is. And they were all straight run. :( I have mixed feelings about that. On one hand, I kind of wanted a rooster at some point, so if it does end up being a cockerel and not a pullet, I might be ok with that... This is a really stupid question, please be gentle, but would he still be just like a rooster of any other breed?

Aren't Silkie Bantams supposed to be more friendly and easy to handle than a lot of other breeds?

He is still going to just like a regular rooster of any other breed just probably more calm but since they are hatchery chicks they could be more jumpy than breeder ones but either way he is still going to be a protective good rooster but if it's bearded u might need to give him a ponytail so he can see better to protect ur lady's or u can just trim its crest instead

Just keep things low for the silkis mine will perch on the edges of the wood boxes I have sitting, some just like to huddle on the floor My Sultuns and Silkis pretty much stay together at night. I hope to relocate them to their own area soon.

Hoping this is a good spot to post this. I picked up some silkie and frizzle babies recently, mixed colors. (Could be paint, blue, silver, porcelain, white, to name a few).

Some of these chicks have the most interesting colors. I'm used to BBS and really have no clue how to tell colors on young chicks besides bbs.

Any thoughts on these guys? The darker one has like a barring going on, but none of the parents are partridge to my knowledge unless a white was hiding it. He's kind of a grey/brown shade. Taupe kind of.

One of the whites looks like it may be paint.

Any input appreciated. :)

Can I feed them banana pieces? Or is that too sugary.
(Sorry, I ask so many questions)

Nothing wrong with asking questions. :) I feed my babies mashed banana with boiled rice, they love it. My older birds like their banana rolled in mixed seed. :)
Bananas are a great source of B group vitamins , deficiencies of B1 are the main cause of wryneck.

no heat lamp, because they grow there wings faster and they all to keep each other warm, my silkies were cold at first but then they adjusted to the temperature and are doing great, at night everyone will huddle up and sleep together, then in the morning there as active as they can be.  :cd       ;)

I don't know how you are keeping them warm enough, without a broodie or heat lamp. For the first week of life they need a temp of 90-95 to thrive.
This link is a great source of information for anyone raising chicks. :)

ok.  NAvigating newbie here  Costa Rica. never really cold sometimes rainy.  always predators.
anyhow.  This lumber is expensive.  I am transitioning from just chickens to Silkies.
I want to build them a new coop.  The Silkies I used to have prefereed to roost on my back steps.
I think they have a hard time perching on  branches.
My questions are for coop design.  Any problems with 1/2" wire fencing for an elevated floor and what would be the best roost?

I'm not fond of wire floors, little legs can fall through and I've seen toes amputated. Directly on the dirt is how most of mine are constructed. We are currently turning a shipping crate into a silkie coop. Low roosts , hinged roof ( for easy access ) . The iron roof goes on today and then I'll give it a lick of paint. :)
You should have a look at the ' coop ' section on the home page, lots of wonderful ideas there. :)
