Silkie thread!

My heart is broken, I never wanted chickens they were my husbands idea/hobby and I thought he was nuts. 2 years ago we got our first 5 girls (red/black sexlink & barred rock) it's fun watching them grow and develop their own personalities. A year later we got 4 silkie chicks 3 of which ended up being roosters we couldn't keep due to living within city limits. We did everything we knew to make her apart of the flock they just never accepted her. So when we got our next to hens (buff & Americana) we put them together hoping they would become their own group. Well they were fine then we started noticing the older they got the more they started picking on our silkie as well. She learned to stay out of their way. She was broody most the time and they would get beside her in the nesting box and lay eggs she slept next to them. We never expected to find her dead today. My heart is in pieces she loved us and we let her down. It makes angry at the other girls. I never imagined I'd be so hurt over losing a chicken but she was such a sweetheart.I was thinking about bringing her inside crazy enough..

I am sorry for you losing one of your babies!!! Everytime one of mine die I cry so you are defiantly not alone trust me!! I was devastated last week when a hawk murdered one of mine and left a pile of feathers and bone in my back yard!! my heart hurt everytime I looked out side and seen the feathers and nothing picked them up!! now my friend that's a breeded asked me to take some of her favorites because something keeps killing hers and one looks just like mine the hawk got so I cry everytime I see it like I failed her!!! having chickens is 100% not for the faint of hearts I have cried more in the six months I have had chickens then ever!!! thank good all my chickens get alone!!!

She finally ate some bread my rooster feed her she was already upset when I picked her up!! she's 2years old so it could be either! her lover died protecting her so I hope she isn't depressed! my friend had lots of birds and something keeps killing them so I took some!

The little Black Silkie is in a better place in your yard than in a yard where predators are attacking the chickens. Give her time. Some Silkies are okay with being held and some never like it. Some get tame enough to eat from your hand but then run away if you try to handle them. I don't hold new birds right away. I let them learn to trust hand treats for quite a while before handling them. Older Silkies that haven't been handled much will take longer to acclimate.

Hello, Took some pictures of my Silks and thinking I have 4 boys and 1 girl. Oh but the girl is so proud. Can anyone tell from the pictures if that is what I have?

I got Sid (blue silkie) & Stella (white silkie) three months ago as day old babies. Unfortunately, at about 6 weeks old Sid went missing and we never found him

Then I got Sye (splash silkie) at 6 weeks old for Stella. I put them together immediately, unaware their size difference due to their age difference (3 weeks) would pose a problem. Needless to say, Sye died the next day. I'm not sure how

With all of that being said, our 'girl' Stella became the fella named Stella when he crowed one morning (he's my very first chicken and I just can't get enough of that adorable sound that comes out of his beak) and we finally picked up his perfect mate, Flo from Florida, on Friday afternoon down at the beach! Stella is 3 months old and Flo is a year this month! I just love her Splash coloring and think she is so beautiful! I absolutely love my two Silkies

So-o-o --- Stella is the Fella that's in love with Flo from Florida? Sounds like a hit song to me!

she is drinking my daughter was holding her for a hour yesterday and she was like purring at her but she doesn't move a hole lot where ever you put her she stay's she doesn't run away when you walk up to her she walks but don't run she is supposedly 2 years old! so I wouldn't think its because shes old but the chinkens cuddle her and she gets up and moves like she wants to be alone!

I'm sorry too. i have totally been there in the last 4 years...a number of times. oddly my silkies seem to hold their own here. i have mixed flock of large fowl and banties. They are all different but mine do more picking than GETTING picked on. little tyrants! Just think of the good life she had. Its not the other girls fault. They are just being chickens! we love them warts and all!

I have like 15 places to hide! A hawk picked up my baby two feet away from me and I hit it with a rock and it dropped her she seems fine but I about had a heart attack!!! snow white is my favorite!! I would have been going to jail for a fine I can't pay if I could have been a little closer!! Thankfully she seems unfazed but is living in my shower and the others lock in the run! Hopefully she's not as delicate as people say silkies are!!! It's like my silkies don't understand to hide!! they play in there but not hide
