Silkie thread!

juliaaa, if these are in fact silkie cochin crosses they will make fantastic broodies. I'm thinking of purposely crossing mine just for this reason, just to have a few dedicated broody hens.

What part of the country are you in? If you are near me I have a few surplus silkie chicks.

I am new to silkies, but have jumped in with both feet. I noticed the other day that my black girls all have the same sheen. I know that in general on most other breeds it is just the roosters that get this sheen. So is it a desired thing in silkies?
Thanks so much!

The one without silkied feathers is a cross; the one with silkied feathers is silkie. I don't see frizzled feathers on either one. The breeder was obviously going for sizzles.

Agree...in your pic...The one hiding in back is Silkie,
The one in front is a mix breed

Just got 5 red silkies which are a couple of weeks old. I read how friendly they are but my chicks cower in a corner when you go to hold them. What is the best way to 'tame' them? Is it just lots and lots of holding or are there some tricks to it?

They are probably in that stage where they think you are the evil one eyed monster coming to torture them....it will get better as they get older! Just continue to hold them and give treats! I would love to see some pics of your reds!

Make sure they get used to your voice and your hand being in the brooder. After they are a little older, I start to give them some bread crumbs from my hand in the brooder. I always pick them up and talk softly to them while holding them. I give them names and repeat their names to them. Then you can begin giving them treats from your hand while holding them. Works for me and hope it helps you. I think all chicks will react to anything new at first as they do not know if it is something good or something that will hurt them. It's our job to make sure they know that a hand will not hurt them. All of my chickens are pets and all 25 of them have names. I talk to them when I am cleaning, watering and feeding them. They follow me around in their pen and have to see everything I'm doing. Truthfully, I don't think the majority of chickens really like to be picked up or restricted by us but unrestricted, mine will sit on my lap for quite a while. I think we have to remember that they are not dogs and just accept the attention they give us as the chickens they are!
