Make sure they get used to your voice and your hand being in the brooder. After they are a little older, I start to give them some bread crumbs from my hand in the brooder. It's our job to make sure they know that a hand will not hurt them. All of my chickens are pets and all 25 of them have names. I talk to them when I am cleaning, watering and feeding them. They follow me around in their pen and have to see everything I'm doing. Truthfully, I don't think the majority of chickens really like to be picked up or restricted by us but unrestricted, mine will sit on my lap for quite a while. I think we have to remember that they are not dogs and just accept the attention they give us as the chickens they are!
