Silkie thread!

Hi Silkie experts. I have a few questions you may be able to answer for me. I have two young silkies. I picked them out of brooder boxes of 50+ chicks without knowing much about them age wise. Can anyone give me an approximate age by looks? Can you tell anything on gender yet? The frizzle doesn't have black feet or beak but has the 5 toes so I'm guessing just not a good quality bird. The buff is missing the outside half of its wing feathers - I'm guessing pecked off by the other birds it was with. Will they regrow? If there is anything else you can tell it would be great! They had never been handled and I'm trying to get them tamed down a bit. When I got them they were covered in poo, smelly and the frizzle ended up having cocci. Everyone is looking, smelling and feeling better now.

your white one is considered a sizzle - a frizzled cochin silkie cross. the wing feathers should grow back soon since they are still at the growing stage. Age wise, they look to be around 2-2.5 months old at most, past the fluff grow out stage (3-6 weeks) but not far past it. So around 8-10 weeks old ?? Just an educated guess.

I see dark skin on the sizzle, but with all the yellow it is definately more cochin than silkie. (probably a sizzle crossed back with another frizzle or frizzle gened cochin - so like 3/4 cochin 1/4 silkie) - don't hold me to that though. lmao just a guess based on what I see. I have silkie crosses and they tend to have slate/grey or even black skin, legs, beaks...

They are very cute. too young to tell sex yet, so wait a month or two and repost good side shots for us to start the guessing game. lol

Hi Taprock, my 12 yr. old son thinks your new frizzle chickie is "sooooo cute !"

Unfortunately, I've closed our farm to any new outside animals. It was so difficult for him to not bring home any new chickens from the recent swap and sale.

And guess what the only chicken he wanted to bring home was ? A frizzle !

I suppose a trade of a silkie for a frizzle wouldn't have been such a bad one, but rules are rules. "Only go to sell chickens, not bring any new ones home."

Good thing he's a pretty good child and goes by our rules. Plus, his father is on the same page. We have plenty of chickens on our farm that need to be sold (check out the for sale pages) (along with some chickens from a friend that we are trying to also sell).

Check out our website if you haven't been there yet !

Thanks,

Can anyone tell me why the prettiest, most typey chicks always seem to be the ones with 4 toes on one foot??????

Im wondering now if I should breed these anyway, how hard is it to get the missing toes out of a line?

Thanks so much. The Sizzle explains so much. Where I bought them they told me it was a frizzle Cochin and I have Cochins so I knew it wasn't but from the little I know about Silkies it didn't quite fit either. I thought they were older than a month. The BB Red I also got as an "older chick" started crowing this week!
