Silkie thread!

Hoping you have a wonderful hatch!!
Beautiful photos! Love those colors!!
About the only thing I look for at this age is foot feathering and toe count/spacing. Looks like you've got lots of foot feathering there!
Thank you - I did snap some foot pictures.
The non-SG - nice toes?

And the SG - the toes are not connected at all (hard to tell in the photo), but the one toe on each foot is so close to the 5th toe. Is that a major issue?

Thanks for the help - I am learning as I go!

Phyllis got a hair cut, and now needs a bath.
Phyllis reminds me of my pullet Molly.

I'm still learning myself but that pink on the SG's feet might be a bad thing. I don't know how old your chicks are but it could still go away. I had a buff that hatched with all pink feet but they turned to a darker color as it got older. I don't think the feet ever turned all black, like your guys, though. I also have a chick that had pink on each toe, that never went away. I don't think it's a DQ, though?? And if you have them just for pets, then who cares!

Your chicks are very cute. I'm pretty sure that's some good foot feathering for a young chick.

Thanks - I searched old threads about the pink on the toes this morning, it seemed like the general consensus was that it should fade in the first few weeks. So hopefully that's what happens with the SG! They just hatched today - the pics were taken straight out of the incubator - so they are brand new :)

I haven't shown, but am thinking about giving it a shot at some point...

Checked on her this morning, she wasn't in the nest. Checked on her a bit ago and she was in there, she didn't get mad at me, so I guess she isn't broody... just having a hard time laying perhaps? The last 2 eggs were oddly shapen, hopefully there isn't anything bad going on in there :(

I just wanted to share...I had my first 2 "homegrown" silkie chicks hatch today. One is a showgirl, the other is not. I know that not too much can be seen at this age - but do they look like nice quality chicks? And here is the hen...don't mind the cheese on the floor...LOL I have 6 more eggs cooking in my incubator - they're due in about 12 days. I had to stagger my hatch, the hen is laying intermittently and I didn't want to waste them!
So cute and pretty! I love your hen.

I dont' know what is going on,. SHe's still sitting in the nest, but no egg. She isn't unhappy if I touch her, she just lays there. I gave her an egg and nothing, she just looks at it. :( You think she's egg bound? should I give her a bath?

My Sasy did this for several weeks she would act like she was sitting but no egg, or the egg would be beside her cold. She finally snapped out of it. Maybe just getting use to the hormone thing.

I went out to check on her again, she was laying on the egg. I had to pry her out of there, she was laying on it like a load of bricks LOL. she ate and then went back on it, so I went and got the only silkie egg I had that I was saving for the incubator and gave it to her. She's coddling it.

I picked her up and felt around, I don't feel any egg at all in there. this follows her pattern though, lay eggs for approx 2 weeks, then go broody. Just she normally gets grumpy if you go near her and she isn't. so weird! could it be because I have roosters now?

I've never done this broody thing bbefore. will she wait for the egg to hatch? will she give up and leave it? does that ever happen? should I get my friend's incubator ready? Also, it is winter, so will I need a heat source if it does hatch out, or will it stay warm enough under her? this is winter in southern maine :)
