Silkie thread!

Paintedfeathers, my heart goes out to you and your sweet peep Nori. I absolutely love reading about your silkies, and feel like I know them! I know you have probably googled your heart out, but I will try and research for you too! Please keep us all posted about this sweet girl!!!!

need some help. So I think the reason nori can't lay is because she is prolapsed =( i soaked her again and tried to work it and she was just prolapsing, no egg. I put some nupercainal on, it's like preperation H but better. I have heard before that any sort of "caine" is toxic to chickens

But what choice do i have... I can't bring her to the vet again. Poor thing, I hope she makes it. She's been such a trooper. Does anyone else have any suggestions?
Oh, no!! So awful! Wish I had some advice for you.....

Hello all! I am new to the Silkie breed and am already in love with these funny little creatures. I have 5 babies now, hatched on April 9th that came from a breeder. I started with 4, one died shortly after coming home with what we suspect was just "failure to thrive",..The breeder was kind enough to replace him/her for me, and I wound up leaving with 2 more..thats chicken math for ya.

Anyhow, I will be trying to read through the thousands of posts on here to learn everything I can about these babies. I have raised chicks before, but nothing as teeny as these. We love all of our chickens, but the silkies are a little extra special :)

I have to take some good pictures later, but here is a camera phone pic.

Welcome to the Silkie world :) I am still pretty new as well. These little chickens can very quickly worm their way into your heart. I truly love them :) I have found this forum to be full of wonderful, caring, and knowlegeable people! Again, welcome!

Good news and bad news....
bad news, my wry neck chick suddenly took a turn for the worse and today I found him dead, after apparently having one of his flopping spells and landing with his head in the water and drowning himself.

good news, one of my silkies hatched 6 babies (mostly LF mixes, olive eggers, cochin crosses, wyandotte crosses) today and yesterday! She is a first time mom, and is doing very good with them.I have another broody silkie on 4 turkey eggs due next week, pics are sure to show up on here of them too when they hatch.

I would try the Preparation H as it has an ingredient that helps shrink the swelling and the Nupercainal is just a topical anesthetic. Try this link to a BYC forum on prolapse.https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/793/please-help-my-chicken-with-prolapse . I hope something helps her!

Glad to hear about your new babies though!!

I can't seem to break my broody white silkie - I tried separating her and she went ballistic - jumping and flying with all her might to get out of the cage. I seriously thought she was going to knock herself out. So, I just put her back in the run and keep taking away any eggs that she happens to get and put her out of the nesting box into the run several times a day. She will get water, food, poop, even dust bathe for a few minutes, then she's back up the ramp. She hasn't laid in over a week or so. She just sits in there on an empty nest and of course is crabby with everyone. Any other ideas that would work with me letting her stay in the coop and run where she won't try to kill herself?
