Silkie thread!

No, you aren't doing anything wrong - its just that the method is only 50% accurate

just like the holding them by the head and seeing if they curl up or lay flat at under a week old - or the toe length... all birds react differently - and their reactions are not always separated by sex. I had some very aggressive girls (those were feather color sexed and not silkies) and some extremely passive boys, when they got older they switched attitudes. I am finding out the curved/flat beak isn't accurate either on my Silkies either - it might be for some people's birds but I have two boys here with perfectly flat straight "female" beaks, growing combs and wattles and streamers!

The only for sure signs are the streamers that the boys get - although I had one one hen that had what looked like streamers when she molted. Comb growth about 4 months old and wattles if they are beardless are good indicators, but before that it is still just a guessing game.

On some lines the crest on the girl goes forward, the boys sweep back. That does hold true on my birds, except for one confused boy? who has a crest that goes straight up. Mohawk I guess...
On some of my roos, the streamers are the ONLY indication that they are boys, they have the girl afro look. But I do have a girl who has a crest that isn't an afro, it swooshes back more... But she lays an egg. That was surprising since we bought her as a boy.

Streamers and poofs can still trip you up. That's why I find it amazing that some people declare that they can sex silkies at 8 weeks. I wouldn't dare!

Yeah, they can trip you up. I have two three-month-olds with beautiful poofs, no combs, but sizable combs. One stands more like a rooster, the other more like a hen. I'm hoping at least one's a hen because right now I'm looking at a total of three hens out of ten silkies if my suspicions on the older ones genders are correct.

I am not saying this to upset anyone..just a statement about the 3 roos I have and the one I see above.. Again...I am not showing just raising for myself, friends, family, and selling for whatever.!!

I intend them to be of good quality but don't care a lick if they are or are not good enough for show. I don't even know if I am sure about what a really quality one looks like in person.
The red roo above looks almost identical to my red. I do not intend to show him...neither do I intend to breed him to my Silkie hens. I think I am going to keep him, but he needs some time out working in the garden with me...I call him "Dingbat". No beard, ratty feathers, a big comb ...I will have to check out his comb color now that I know that it needs to be a specific color and size rather. I don't know how many times he has "attacked" me in the pen...the 1st I turned around to see what on Earth had run in to me...a piece of corn?? Now I play a game with him when he starts. I call it "I am the biggest hen in this pen!" Sounds stupid huh!!?? I spread my hand out a bit in front of him so it looks like another roos splayed feathers. on its neck. Then sometimes we have a little "fight". He loses but I do not play rough. A time or two he hass sneaked up behind me as I am going out the door of the pen. He will eventually be a good pal to have around while I am weeding and finding him worms, bugs, and grubs!!!

My 2nd roo is splashed"? It is a light blue and white splashed...I think. I bought him from another lady that raises "quality" Silkies....well...maybe. But I don't think I have seen it yet. He is almost 5 1/2 months old.

Will anyone point out good and bad for me? It won't bother me, really it won't. I really like the bird, he looks nice and I think he has good toes. So far he has been good natured.

This is a pic of my new calico roo. Comments please????? I have more and can get more if needed....my daughter is here for our family reunion and she loves chickens, too.

He is not cleaned up for pics and he lives in a chain link dog kennel with a coop inside and the 3 hens, 2 d'Uccle older chicks, and the young splashed roo.
TY

I love him! I'm keeping an eye out for some this color, or salmon. Pam

If she isn't egg bound, she is probably broody. Has she been laying anything? Silkies are notorious early brooders. Try giving her some eggs or golfballs or something to make her happy

Thankyou she has timed it very poorly, I had just put eggs into lock down when I figured she was broody I would have shared a few :)

If she is serious you can share the chicks - just stick them under her at night after they dry out and she will brood them for you. Watch her the first morning to make sure she doesn't take exception to any of them - my Blue Silkie did not like the extended black patterned black/white Sumatra chick, but all the rest she accepted (brown, white, yellow and solid black). I found doing that in the first three days worked great, after that time it depended on the hen. Some would take older chicks, some would not.
