I love the BLRW, but they are not great layers, and mine went broody. In fact, My first one is responsible for my being a hatch a holic.  Yep, she flew the coop when they pipped, and I had gotten a back up..bator, just in case, good thing I did..I think.   ??   Yep, all her fault that I hatch. 

Ha ha, no enablers here. My blrw are great layers, I'm about to pop a dozen under a silkie this week.

Soo cute! One with eyebrows and one with eyeliner. Your littler vaulted scull baby could be more like gingers momma. This is her.


In some breeds they say that the ones with eyeliner are hens, it will be interesting to see if that is the case for your little ones.

Aww, i love her color! I hope you are right I would love if she looked like this. I love the light colored body but super dark black head. I wonder if my darker partridge chick will have the same color only darker, because of the darker stripes? I wonder if that makes a difference or not. I would sure love if they were both girls. So far I get a strong girly vibe from the vaulted one, more then the other, but I really hope they are both girls

what age does everyone put their chicks, that dont have a broody mother, in with all their other chooks?

I have a pen just for juveniles. In the warm weather I will move them outside as soon as they have feathers. When the older ones are ready for breeding they go to their pen I bred them for. By this time I have sold the ones that haven't made the cut. I keep the newly hatched chicks in brooders which I use 20 gallon aquariums and clear large totes and when they out grow those they go in an old water trough thats in my carport room which is enclosed. So they are safe from predators. Generally at about 6 to 8 weeks they go outside unless it's winter. Then I'll keep them inside a month longer. Then they go in the juvie pen which has a heat lamp. There is no heat other than a heat lamp in the carport room nor is there any on the fron porch where I keep the brooders. It is also enclosed.

The chicks I have with a mother right now will go outside in a pen soon along with the ones that don't have a mother with them. They are all orp chicks. Once pick out what I want i'll sell the rest. Any boys unsold will go to freezer camp when they get big enough. We don't eat silkies.

Welcome! They honestly all look like smutty buff's to me even the darkest one, but I could be wrong. Im pretty sure any partridge is suppose to have chipmunk stripes as babies

Partridge definately have chipmunk stripes. I've never had any that look like that so I am no help other than the partridge advice.

Oh they are adorable . I see a couple of buff in there and yes a porcelain , the other I'm not quite sure of. Could be partridge , they are very fluffy.

I could be wrong.. Im not an expert but the more I look at them, im pretty sure you have a normal buff and then the other three darker ones are called smutty buffs I've asked color questions SOO many times and this color was one of them I had, and asked about and I was always told it was called a smutty buff. The darker brown on their backs vary from light to very dark. As adults they look buff but will have dark brown/even black icing over there back/ rump and even through their wing/tail feathers. I think they are pretty. Google smutty buffs, im betting thats what they are.

Now that makes more sense to use ivermectin now that I know how it is used. Does it soak into their skin or do they eat it from under their wing? I think I may try that next time. My birds are separated by color except for the sizzles and the most I have in a pen is 7. I have a pair of silver sebrights and a trio of black orps whick I plan to add some more girls when they grow up.

Ivermectin paste (rather than liquid) stays on the skin better than a liquid Ivermectin. The chickens are sleepy at roost time and hardly notice the treatment so to my knowledge they don't eat/touch it. It soaks into their skin overnight before they have a chance to dust-bathe it off. One paste tube lasts me for 4 hens and never gets used up completely. After a year throw it away and get a new tube.

Sounds like you have quite a separated flock. It should be easier to worm with that many birds. Roost time and in dim light is best when chickens are calmer. My DH holds out each wing while I Q-tip under their wings on the SKIN. We're done in 15 minutes with 4 birds. It's easier with 2 people using a foldup table to set down each bird as the treatment is done so fast before the bird gets fully awakened. Keep a calendar or log of when treatments are applied. Don't eat the eggs for at least a week. We go two weeks on the side of caution and save the eggs to boil and feed the wild birds. We figure they get Ivermectin treatments 2nd hand through the chicken eggs!
