Silkie thread!

Cynthia! Congrat's on the new babies!

Has anyone ever tested the theory on the rounder the egg the more chance of it being a HEN? I've done it and it seems to work well! It's probably just one of those wives tales though! LOL

TC

Not me, no new silkie babies, but I did just have a marans mix hatch.

Ok here are my 8 week old babies. I am new with Silkies so I thought I would post a couple of pics to see if you have any ideas to the sex of these babies.

The black and white ones are more shy the buff one is more bold and more tame. The buff one will come around to see what I'm doing before the other ones do. The white one will cry if it is alone or if I pick it up but the buff one doesn't really do it to much. It's normally the first one I pick up because it's always right there checking things out. LOL

I know we are always posting pics and asking about sex but sometimes this is the only way we can learn. LOL
So any ideas??

WOW I'll have to let her know this! Thanks! That actually came from two different Vets though! May I ask how you know this so I can pass it on to her?

As for the yellow feathers! A good friend of mine used to show her birds! She had to take them off corn before showing them. That's how I know of the feathers turning yellow!

TC

The yellowing in the feathers is from the sun, the good thing is that once they molt they lose the yellow. A high maize diet does however change the colour of the eye. In sussex the eye needs to be a nice ' bay colour and too much corn dilutes it to orange/yellow.

Oh what a shame. The multi vitamin may kick in fast enough to allow her to be a good momma. At 5 years this may well be her last chance to be a momma. Thiamine B 1 is thought to be main deficiency in wry neck so it may help if you get a B complex. FYI, marmite and brewers yeast are good sources of thiamine.
What's your ' gut feeling '? ( about taking the eggs from her ) I'd go with that. Sorry I can't help you out on this one.

She's got 2 maybe 3 babies now. She seems to be doing fine with them. She don't have much room to move around right now and I know the chicks will stay under her for a few days too. Once the hatching is done I'll put her in the old water trough I use for raising babies. She will have more room then. I'm hoping the vitamins will have kicked in by then.

Oh what a sweety. Let's hope the vits do their job. I wouldn't use medicated feed for the youngsters , at least not while she is with them.

Start giving her Vitamin E! Get the capsules or liquid. I prefer the capsules. It's easier for me to pock it in their mouths than deal with the liquid. If you do the liquid? Be sure to put the syringe/eye dropper in the right side of her mouth. I kneel on my knees, place the chicken between them, squeeze just enough to keep them from escaping, lock your feet together to keep them from slipping out backwards and open their mouth. Insert the syringe/eye dropper towards the back of their mouth and disperse!

Cod Liver Oil is also a wonderful thing to give our chickens when they are sick! It helps them with their immune system. I take one capsule twice aday and haven't been sick in years! I learned about CLO by reading a chicken book when one of my hens got sick!

My Vet suggested I feed the chickens "medicated chick starter" at all times. It helps to prevent the sour crop problem.

If you have light colored chickens? Feeding them corn will also turn their feathers yellow!

I'm the one with the RIR ear problem. I've been thru the wringer myself trying to figure out poor Dorothy's problem until her eardrum burst. Then I knew it wasn't crook/wry neck.

Best wishes to ya!

Many years ago I used to hand feed cockatiels and parkeets mainly to tame them. And this winter I had to give medications to some chickens by mouth so I've gotten good at that part. Chickens move quick unlike a hungry cockatiel chick. I bought a bunch of pipettes which make it alot easier to "tube feed". I also had to feed a chick for a month till it finally started eating on it's own.

I"m thinking her problem is more of a vitamin issue. She hasn't eaten much and has sat on those eggs from day one. I know this because she is inside and I check on all the inside birds often. I was worried about her tumbling over from her head being bent down to her breast but when I stick my hand in to give her the vitamins or check on her babies she raises up her head but it don't come up like is should. I"m not sure if I have vitamin E but I'll look. If I do it's the gel tabs. Should I give her the whole contents of it?

do you have poultry nutri-drench? This not just vitamin E, there are other things at play. Maybe I've missed where you stated what you've already given her? Fancychooklady has some links, regarding thiamine deficiency and its links to wry neck in chickens.

I don't use medicated feed for any of my birds. Since I have so many and if anybody gets sick and I have to give them meds I have to take them off the medicated feed. That would just require me to have to go and buy unmedicated feed. When I have a mother with babies I have one bowl of layer for her one bowl of chick feed and fresh water. I'll be giving this momma vitamins. I suppose she won't be so easy to cooperate once she is moved to a larger space.
