Silkie thread!

So I am now a new chicken junkie totally addicted! I used to be a professional horse trainer...can you imagine what I could do with this set up?

You could fit so many silkies in there and they would be in paradise! I hope to buy a place with a barn like that some day.

I just bought this feather fixer. Is this what you are saying has the mite tech? I threw out the bag already. It sounds great. Do you use the scratch mixed with the grain? Or just as a treat?
I'd like to try this. Haven't looked at your link yet, but every other link I ever saw gave a recipe for like 50 birds. I only have five. Still would like yo try.
Me too. I saw someone puts seeds in a mason jar for a week to sprout. But not sure where I saw that link.

Just browsing self-sufficiency or gardening websites and youtube I found a lot of info on various ways to sprout including the mason jar method. I plan to set up a 4-inch high 4x4-foot raised cedar garden bed with a mesh cover to sprout tender grains for the chickens to eat through the wire without them being able to scratch up all the seeds that are sprouting underneath.

Just got 5 Silkie chicks for kids 4-h projects. any info would be great.
What a great project for 4-H! When I was getting started I downloaded the Chickens for Dummies book on my Kindle and it helped tremendously. Best silkie specific advice I can give you is they eat regular layer feed but love treats like left over veggies and fruits. Be careful if they are all white though-some foods can stain them and they'll need a bath soon after eating (like watermelon).

When they do get messed up, here's a good video on how to give a chicken a bath. I also put in Bluing (found in the laundry/soap aisle) to make the white silkies extra white.

bring it inside, give it a bath in warm water, like 90 degrees, blow dry, feel for any broken bones or open skin. Wetting the feathers helps do this, IMO cos you can see to the skin.

I have to join this silkie thread because I'm in love w my hatchery silkie Squirt! Went broody at 7 mos and hatched 3 polish chicks. Took in 2 more to raise.

Now her sister Nugget is broody and I'm trying to decide if I can let her hatch (wo selling the babies I've got I can't hatch more).

i dont see anything wrong on the outside
Its feathers didnt look messed up..i wonder if its traumatized.I tried to feed it a little water with a dash of sugar and food.It swalowed about 3 times.I laid it in a little dog cage on a really soft sweater.put some very wet food in it with the water with few sprinkle of sugar and a little egg yolk
Ill try wetting it tomorrow
See if there is anything broken
