Silkie thread!

Are silkies typically very cold sensitive or am I dealing with something else here? We are going on 24 hours with no power due to an ice storm. He was in the brooder with other chicks and when I went to check my silkie and the smallest banty were dead. As I looked closer I noticed the silkie wasn't dead yet, so we gathered him up and ran him across the yard to my grandparents who had some heat. We were able to revive him and keep him warmer but this morning he was the same way and we haven't been able to revive him. He's alive, but barely.

If you had a heat light on them and the power goes out and they have to deal with the cold after being use to the heat light it will kill them. They need to gradually get use to the cold and they need to be old enough to have feathers if they don't have a mom to keep them warm. Sorry for your loss.

still nothing from either "hen" i looked at their combs and the male has a large comb and the two hens have very small combs and their earlobes are also kinda light blue. also if you feel the pubic bones of both they both have small space between (maybe like one finger?) also how big are silkies supposed to get? my black hen i can pick up with one hand. the male stands maybe 12inches? and the hens maybe 10 inches give or take a little.

You said in an earlier post you got them last Feb. That would make them just a year old and it isn't uncommon for them to be a year old at lay especially if they were to start over winter. I bet they start up within the next month. Keep us posted!

What category would my White Silkie fall into out of these choices? I'm thinking "other"...

400

I would choose Feathered leg.
Silkies should have feathered legs.

Very sorry to hear. I never use a heat lamp in fear of that. We don't usually have real nasty winters tho either. Is the Silkie still alive? Hope he perks up and pulls thru for you.

He has perked up some. And on top of this I have baby ducks that have decided to hatch and it's difficult without regulated temps and humidity.

Oh wow, hope your electric comes back on soon. Know anybody you can barrow a generator from? Just a thought.
Glad to hear the silkies perking up that's a good sign is he eating? Best of luck with the ducks. Maybe a hot water bottle would help?

We are saying with my grandparents. They don't have any power either but have gas stove and papaw finally decided that it was worth pulling out the generator since we didn't have power yet.

Little silkie mix didn't make it. :(. I understand that happens but it still sucks.

All four ducks are still alive and in different stages of hatching.

No word on when power will be restored.

Hi everyone!

I have a silkie question since I'm a newish silkie owner. I have a black silkie hen who is about 10-12 months and laying. I noticed recently that below her earlobes (which are blue, as per normal silkies), she has something that looks like red-looking bite marks. They are on both sides of her beak. l searched chicken anatomies and I actually think they're part of her earlobes. My other silkies don't have this feature, so I was wondering if this was normal? At first I was worried that she had bite marks because she had chicken lice which I am still treating..but they've been there for a while now and she looks otherwise healthy. She also has a fairly large black comb which my other silkies don't have either.

Anyway, thank you for any input!
